Story/Info Time - We do a LOT of backflow assembly test, repair, replacement and new installations. More frequently than I’d like, these service calls are because these have been stolen from our customers properties. What the scrap thieves do is turn off the City Meter and take a saw to the copper lines that come up above ground. Usually within about 3 minutes they can get the water off, cut the assembly, and be gone.

I did a little test on these 6 assemblies that we removed LEGALLY - it’s approximately 80lbs of brass and a tiny amount of copper. The scrap yard pays a little over $1/lb for this type of brass. So about $85 for this load of backflow assemblies (6ct).

The trouble is - because of the material cost, labor, and special licenses and certifications needed to do this type of plumbing, these 6 backflow replacements represent about $24,000 in cost to the customer to get their water back up and running and be in compliance with the City.

The steel cages help a lot as a deterrent to would-be thieves - so we ALWAYS offer that as an option when we replace one of these assemblies.

There’s a first time for everything! This customer called in an emergency leak pouring out his back wall. The wall was soaked that we poked through it and found this. Original pipe from when the home was built 25 years ago. They snapped it off and soldered the crimp. Held for 25 years!

Temporary cap until he gets it all dried up then we’ll put in the hose bib that was always supposed to be there!

Yep - that’d be the reason the drain was really slow! Gotta love old Galvanized and Cast Iron sludge scale!

Commercial property owners - it seems like the Cities are cracking down on backflow assemblies that have not been installed yet. If you get a letter that looks something like this - the other photos are a bit of a glimpse into your future…

This was a smaller 1” assembly, but you need a licensed plumbing contractor and a certified tester/installer to put these in (kind of like City Wide Plumbing…)

Not a big deal - but important to keep the City off your back and your water turned on, which is pretty important.

We followed this up with a concrete slab and cage locked down to keep it from being stolen.

Yeah - that’s an 80 gallon water heater 7 feet in the air. Gotta be honest- I had a good 15 second “do I want this job???” Moment while thinking how the hell we would get this down safely.

This restaurant would have had to shut down for a week if we didn’t get in there to help, so we just had to send it.

This heater was 12 years old and had never been maintained at all - so we had to cut away all the old leaking and corroded pipes, and spend about 15 mins with a shop vac getting a ton of sediment out of it before we could lower it down. Turned out great and the customer was very happy to get that done and over with!

This morning in plumbing-land….

The light fixtures are not supposed to double as a water feature. Old cast iron drain pipe had clogged with rust and scale at the trap and the vertical section cracked entirely all the way up. Simple enough fix but no fun crawling around sharp things and electrical to get to it!

A little muddy today in San Tan Valley! Main water line to a business cracked and the boys had to get in after it.

Good thing Robert keeps waders on his truck, it automatically volunteers him to be the one in the hole!

Here's a new fear unlocked for everybody! A customer of ours called and said the faucet blew through the ceiling. Partially skeptical, we were just about as surprised as they were when we got there and the handle and stem did indeed blast off the faucet and into the attic! Look alive, folks! 😅
