Pavement Distress Spotlight:
This week, we’re highlighting a common type of pavement distress—what it looks like, why it happens, and how it’s best addressed. Using industry research and decades of hands-on experience, we’ll help you understand whether it’s a maintenance fix, a repair need, or a sign of something bigger.

Asphalt Raveling

Raveling can be caused by problems related to the mix design, construction, or environmental effects, including:
-Asphalt being mixed with dirty aggregate, to which the binder in the mix
-Insufficient binder in the asphalt mix.
-Segregation of the aggregate in the mix prior to being laid.
-Inadequate compaction of the asphalt layer
-Breakdown of th binder over time or due to exposure to solvents and erosion of fine aggregate.

To prevent raveling, you can follow design and construction best practices. You should Prevent exposure to solvents that would break down the binder.

Tips on responding to raveling: Before putting a treatment over raveled asphalt, clean all loose pieces of asphalt and aggregate from the old asphalt.

Weekly Pavement Distress Spotlight:
This week, we’re highlighting a common type of pavement distress—what it looks like, why it happens, and how it’s best addressed. Using industry research and decades of hands-on experience, we’ll help you understand whether it’s a maintenance fix, a repair need, or a sign of something bigger.

Block Cracking:
Block Cracking is a type of asphalt pavement damage that appears as a network of large, rectangular or square-shaped cracks.

Block cracking is caused by shrinkage of the asphalt and its inability to resist thermal expansion and contraction without cracking.

Last week we discussed "Alligator Cracking." The difference here is:
Block cracking = aging asphalt → maintenance problem
Alligator cracking = failed pavement → structural problem
This distinction is huge for budgets.

At Morgan Pavement, we believe an informed customer makes better long-term decisions. Pavement doesn’t fail overnight—it shows signs, patterns, and warnings long before major repairs are needed.
That’s why we’re launching a weekly pavement education series designed to break down common types of pavement distress, what causes them, and the most effective solutions.
Our goal is to help property owners, managers, and communities better understand what they’re seeing on their asphalt—and what to do about it—using both our real-world experience and industry research, including guidance from the National Asphalt Pavement Association.
Our first discussion will be about: Alligator or Fatigue Cracking. See the images for more information, or give us a call at (480) 646-4781 for more information.
