A pergola can cast plenty of shade—and completely miss the table when you want to use it.

North Dallas afternoon sun enters at a much lower angle than midday sun. That means overhead rafters may handle noon glare while western sunlight travels beneath the roof and directly into the seating area.

Effective shade planning should consider:

◆ The patio’s compass orientation
◆ When the space will actually be used
◆ Rafter depth, direction, and spacing
◆ Pergola height and footprint
◆ Low-angle western exposure
◆ Vertical screens or landscaping
◆ Nearby windows and doors
◆ Fans, lighting, grills, and traffic flow

More overhead lumber is not automatically the answer. If the real goal is full rain protection and predictable all-day shade, a solid patio cover may be the better structure.
