Many Americans decorate their homes as part of their winter holiday celebrations. More than 60% of those who decorate their homes for the holiday utilize at least one extension cord. While holiday lighting and electrical decorations do contribute to the splendor of the season, they can also significantly increase the risk of fires and electrical injuries if not used safely. Here are 10 holiday safety tips:

1) Always buy electrical equipment that displays a label indicating it has undergone independent testing by a nationally recognized testing laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL).

2) Be sure to buy decorations according to your intended use outdoors or indoors.

3) When using an extension cord, select a cord that is long enough to meet your needs. Never attempt to extend the length of an extension cord by connecting it with another extension cord. Match power needs (amperage) of electrical products with amperage rating of extension cords.

4) Never nail or staple cords to the wall or baseboard which can damage the wire insulation.

5) Never remove the ground pin (the third prong) to make a three-prong plug fit a two-prong outlet.

6) Make sure all outdoor electrical outlets are GFCI protected.

7) Place your tree at least 3 feet away from all heat sources, including fireplaces, radiators, and space heaters.

8) Avoid using candles when possible. Consider using battery-operated candles in place of traditional candles.

9) Never use lighted candles on a tree or near other greenery.

10) Strings of lights and garland are staples of holiday decorating, but they can also pose a strangulation hazard. They should never be used as playthings.

Enjoy your holiday decorating.
