Holiday Lighting Safety

Toasty should describe your delicious holiday food, not your decorations or property. Here are a few tips to help keep your celebrations safe:

1. Inspect stored lights and cords before installing them again each season. Look for exposed copper; frayed wire, or wires that have pulled loose from light sockets.
2. Plug lights in before hanging them to verify they are working.
3. Do not exceed the number of light strings the manufacturer says can be linked together. Doing so can be a fire hazard, even though the circuit itself may not be overloaded.
4. Elevate extension cord ends used outside and protect them from precipitation.
5. Do not use lights which become hot to the touch on trees, shrubbery, or other combustible material.
6. Don’t overload a power receptacle or extension cord to the point where plugs are likely to become loose. Use proper splitters when necessary.
7. If an extension cord in good working condition or power block becomes warm to the touch, change a portion of the lights to another power source.
8. Route extension cords in a manner so they will not become a tripping hazard or susceptible to becoming snagged loose.
9. Do not remove ground prongs from electrical plugs.
10. If you love displaying beautiful lights each year, consider having a licensed electrician install receptacles convenient to the places you decorate.
