🏠 The #1 Roofing Problem Most Homeowners Don’t Know They Have… Poor Attic Ventilation.
“You’re the first roofer who’s ever mentioned our ventilation.”
Believe it or not, that’s something we hear all the time.
Most roofing companies focus on the shingles. At KW Roofing, we inspect the entire roofing system—because even the best shingles can fail prematurely if your attic isn’t properly ventilated.
💨 How does roof ventilation work?
Think of your attic like your home’s lungs.
✅ Cool, fresh air should enter through vented soffits along the bottom edge of your roof.
⬆️ As the air warms up, it naturally rises and exits through a ridge vent at the peak of the roof.
When your intake and exhaust are balanced, air continuously flows through the attic, removing heat and moisture.
But here’s where we see problems every week…
🚫 A ridge vent with NO vented soffits.
A ridge vent cannot do its job if there is no fresh air entering the attic. It’s like trying to breathe out without ever taking a breath in.
🚫 A ridge vent AND turtle (box) vents.
Many people assume more vents are better—but that’s not always true. These systems can compete with each other, causing the ridge vent to pull air from the turtle vents instead of drawing fresh air through the soffits.
🚫 A ridge vent AND a power attic fan.
A powered vent can actually pull air backward through the ridge vent or pull conditioned air from inside your home, making your ventilation system less efficient.
These are issues that are visible from the ground, yet they’re often overlooked during a roof inspection.
Poor ventilation can lead to:
❌ Premature shingle failure
❌ Higher cooling costs
❌ Mold and mildew in the attic
❌ Wood rot in your roof decking
❌ Moisture damage
❌ A shorter lifespan for your entire roofing system
At KW Roofing, we don’t just tell you that you need a new roof—we explain why, and we make sure the entire roofing system is designed to perform the way it was intended.
That’s why every inspection we perform includes an evaluation of your attic ventilation. If there’s a problem, we’ll show you exactly what we found, explain why it matters, and recommend the best solution—without the pressure.
