Nutsedge had a good year, now what?
Nutsedge, also known as nutgrass, seeks out the moist, poorly drained sections of your yard or garden. Its leaves are grasslike and yellow-green, while the spiky head is yellow. It's a tough w**d to control because it grows from tiny tubers, or nutlets, that form on roots. Pull out the roots and some tubers will stay behind to grow. What can I do?

Controlling Crabgrass
Using the bright yellow blooms of the forsythia bush as caution signal - don't wait much longer to apply a crabgrass preventer to your lawn. Crabgrass is an annual w**d whose seeds germinate when the top couple inches of soil reaches 55 degrees for 2-3 consecutive day. The blooms of the forsythia can be used as a general indicator to let you know when that is happening in your neighborhood.

Salt Damage
Unfortunately, no one has invented a salt-preventer yet. If you notice dead brown grass between the road and your sidewalk, or along the edges of your driveway, it's time for action. In the spring, flood the affected area to wash the salt or ice-melter off the grass and leach it through the soil away from the grass root area. After two or three heavy waterings, plant seed and apply a starter fertilizer.
