Myth: Bigger trees = bigger money.

Reality: In many northern hardwood stands, huge old trees often hide rot, seams, cavities, and defects — making them worth less at the mill than smaller, sound ones.

Wisconsin research shows economic maturity often hits earlier — around 16–20 inches DBH (depending on site quality). Waiting past ~20" can reduce value unless it's rare veneer quality. That's a shift from old advice pushing 20–24".

Smart harvesting means cutting the right trees at the right time to:
