SEPTEMBER TORNADO AREAS:
September is the month where Fall begins to gain steam - although that will be delayed somewhat this year. The first sweeping cold fronts encounter deep gulf moisture and summer time instability still hanging around. We begin to see larger scale synoptic systems, again, meaning deeper lows/more organized cyclones. Thus, a large part of the lower 48 can experience tornadic activity.
September is also peak waterspout month for the Great Lakes! The waters are still warm from summer, and we get those first cold pockets of air arriving from the north, thus making it the best combination of the two the entire year!
This coming September will be interesting, with our super El Nino being a major driving force behind out weather, we're not quite sure what to expect. Hurricanes that often bring increase tornado activity with them may not show up, and the heat dome may keep the ring of fire going longer than normal!
