1. Use Drain Strainers
Install strainers or screens in your sinks, showers, and tubs to catch hair, food particles, and other debris. Clean these regularly.
2. Avoid Pouring Grease Down the Drain
Grease can solidify in pipes, leading to clogs. Instead, pour cooled grease into a container and dispose of it in the trash.
3. Flush with Hot Water
Regularly flush drains with hot water to help dissolve soap scum, grease, and other build-up.
4. Use Baking Soda and Vinegar
Pour half a cup of baking soda followed by half a cup of vinegar down the drain. Let it sit for 15-30 minutes, then flush with hot water. This can help break down organic materials.
5. Be Careful with What You Flush
Only flush toilet paper and human waste down the toilet. Avoid flushing items like wet wipes, cotton balls, or feminine hygiene products, as they can cause blockages.
6. Regularly Clean Garbage Disposals
Run cold water through your garbage disposal for about 15 seconds before and after use. Occasionally grind ice cubes and bleach to clean the blades and eliminate odors.
7. Use Enzyme Cleaners
Enzyme-based drain cleaners are effective in breaking down organic matter without damaging your pipes. Use these monthly as a preventive measure.
8. Limit Chemical Cleaners
Avoid using harsh chemical drain cleaners regularly, as they can damage pipes and harm the environment. Reserve them for stubborn clogs and use sparingly.
9. Schedule Regular Professional Maintenance.
