Today is National 811 Day, your annual reminder to call 811 before pulling out the shovels, post-hole diggers, or heavy equipment. Striking an underground power line isn't just an expensive accident; it poses a serious safety hazard to you and your community.

Here is what you need to know before starting any yard work:

• Call or click 811 first: Contact your local utility notification center at least a few business days before you dig.

• Wait for the marks: Utility operators will mark the location of underground lines for free.

• Dig with care: Always respect the marks and hand-dig near marked utility lines.
