🌳 Tree Talk Tuesday: That Mushroom May Be Telling You Something

Fall is a common time to notice mushrooms appearing around Connecticut yards. Many are simply decomposing buried roots, mulch or other organic material—but a shelf-like growth attached directly to a living tree deserves a closer look.

These growths are often called conks or fruiting bodies. What you see outside the tree is only the reproductive portion of the fungus. Removing or knocking it off does not remove the fungal growth that may be present within the wood.

That does not automatically mean the tree must come down. It does mean the location and condition of the tree should be evaluated carefully.

If you find a conk on a trunk, large branch or root flare, document:

• Exactly where it is attached
• Its size, shape and color
• Whether it has appeared there before
• Nearby cavities, cracks or loose bark
• Dead branches or thinning in the canopy
• What the tree could strike if it failed

The same amount of decay can represent very different levels of concern depending on the tree’s size, structure and surroundings. A tree growing deep in the woods is not evaluated the same way as one beside a house, driveway or play area.

Take clear photographs before the fruiting body disappears or is disturbed. Avoid chopping into the trunk or digging around the roots to investigate—the damage can make the situation worse without providing a reliable answer.

Some affected trees can be monitored or managed. Others may require pruning or removal when decay has significantly weakened important wood. The mushroom is a clue, not the entire diagnosis.

Before fall cleanup is finished, walk around the base of your larger trees and look closely. If a conk is growing directly from the tree—especially near something it could strike—have the whole tree evaluated rather than simply kicking the mushroom away.

🌳 Save it or remove it? It starts with a thorough assessment.

We look at root health, trunk decay, cracks, branch structure, and canopy condition—along with what’s nearby, like your home or the area where your kids play.

Then we weigh the tree’s condition, the likelihood of failure, and the potential consequences. Can pruning, cabling, or improved growing conditions help preserve it? Or is removal the responsible choice?

At Macomber Tree and Garden LLC, we value saving trees whenever practical and helping you make an informed decision when it’s time to remove one.

🌳 Tree Talk Tuesday: Connecticut Is Asking Residents to Watch Sassafras

Connecticut recently confirmed laurel wilt in symptomatic sassafras trees in Fairfield County. Because the disease can spread through transported wood, residents across the state are being asked to watch for possible signs.

Laurel wilt affects plants in the laurel family, including sassafras and spicebush. Despite its name, it does not affect our state flower, mountain laurel.

Possible warning signs include:

• Leaves that suddenly droop, wilt and turn reddish-brown
• Wilted leaves remaining attached to the branches
• Dark streaking in the sapwood beneath the bark
• Tiny, toothpick-like strings of sawdust produced by ambrosia beetles

These symptoms are clues—not confirmation. Drought, damaged roots and several other diseases can also cause wilting or branch decline. Don’t remove a sassafras or begin peeling back its bark based on one symptom alone.

If you notice a suspicious sassafras or spicebush, photograph the entire plant and take close-up pictures of the affected foliage and trunk. Report the finding to the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station before moving or disposing of any wood.

Avoid transporting branches, logs or firewood from a potentially affected plant. Movement of infested wood is one way the beetles associated with laurel wilt can reach new areas.

Confirmed infections require specific disposal steps and may require removing the affected plant, but accurate identification should come first. An ordinary stressed tree should not be removed simply because its leaves resemble one item on a symptom list.

As you walk your property this fall, take a closer look at your sassafras and spicebush. Early reporting can help Connecticut specialists track where this disease is—and where it isn’t.

🌳 Tree Talk Tuesday: Check for This Mud-Like Patch Before Winter

Spotted lanternflies are entering egg-laying season in Connecticut—and their egg masses are much easier to overlook than the adults.

Fresh egg masses often resemble a narrow smear of gray or tan mud. They may be attached to tree bark, but trees aren’t the only place to check. Lanternflies can lay eggs on nearly any firm outdoor surface.

Take a few minutes to inspect:

• Tree trunks and larger branches
• Trailers, vehicles and outdoor equipment
• Firewood, stones and concrete blocks
• Decks, fences and patio furniture
• Items being moved or stored for winter

If you find a suspected egg mass, photograph it first and report the sighting through Connecticut’s spotted lanternfly reporting system. Accessible egg masses can then be scraped into a sealed container containing rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer, or thoroughly crushed.

Finding eggs on a tree does not automatically mean the tree is dying—or that it needs to be removed or treated. Spotted lanternfly is a plant stressor, but Connecticut guidance emphasizes identifying the pest, scouting the property and choosing management based on the actual level of activity. Not every tree requires treatment.

Be especially careful when moving trailers, firewood, equipment or other outdoor items. Egg masses can hitchhike unnoticed and help this invasive pest spread into new areas.

A slow walk around the property this fall can help you spot what would otherwise remain hidden until spring.

🌳 Tree Talk Tuesday: Don’t Put the Hose Away Yet

Cooler weather doesn’t necessarily mean your trees are finished needing water.

Newly planted trees and evergreens still benefit from consistent moisture as they prepare for winter. Evergreens are especially important to watch because they retain their foliage and can continue losing moisture during cold, windy weather—even when the ground is frozen and their roots cannot replace it.

Before watering, check the soil rather than judging by the surface:

• Dig two or three inches down within the root zone
• If the soil feels dry and crumbly, water slowly and deeply
• Apply water across the root zone—not against the trunk
• Allow saturated soil to dry before adding more
• Give extra attention to trees planted within the past year

A soaker hose or a regular hose set to a slow trickle usually works better than a quick blast from a sprinkler. The goal is to let water soak into the soil instead of running across the lawn.

Continue checking moisture until the ground freezes, particularly when fall rainfall is limited. Entering winter properly hydrated can help reduce winter burn and other moisture-related stress.

If an evergreen develops brown foliage next spring, don’t assume it is diseased, dead or automatically needs removal. Winter injury is one possibility, and the location and extent of the damage should be evaluated before deciding what to do.

Take a few minutes this week to check the soil around your newer trees and evergreens. A slow drink now may make a noticeable difference next spring.
