🌳 What’s that white coating on your dogwood?

It may be "powdery mildew", a common fungal disease we see on flowering dogwoods.

🔎 How we diagnose it:
We look for white or gray powdery growth on the leaves, along with curling, reddish discoloration, yellowing or scorched-looking areas. We also check the tree carefully to rule out other common dogwood diseases.

🌿 What do we recommend?
For mild cases, improving airflow, reducing stress on the tree and cleaning up infected fallen leaves may be all that’s needed.

If infection is severe, starts early in the growing season, or returns year after year, a properly timed fungicide program can help protect new growth.

The goal isn’t just to make the leaves look better — it’s to keep the tree healthy and vigorous long-term.

Concerned about something you're seeing on your trees? Macomber Tree can help identify the problem and recommend the right course of action.

🌳 Tree Talk Tuesday: Mushrooms at the Base of Your Tree

Late-summer moisture can bring mushrooms seemingly overnight—but their location matters.

Small mushrooms scattered through the lawn are often feeding on buried roots, old wood, or other organic material. They don’t necessarily indicate that a nearby tree is unhealthy.

Conks or shelf-like fungi growing directly from the trunk, root flare, or exposed roots are different. These are the fruiting structures of fungi that may be breaking down wood inside the tree.

That doesn’t automatically mean the tree needs to be removed. The level of concern depends on the type of fungus, where it is growing, how much sound wood remains, and what could be struck if part of the tree failed.

If you notice attached fungal growth:

• Photograph it before removing anything
• Note whether it returns in the same location
• Look for nearby cavities, cracks, loose bark, or canopy dieback
• Avoid assuming that knocking it off solves the underlying issue

A tree can still have a green canopy while decay develops lower in the trunk or roots. Catching that clue early allows for a thoughtful evaluation instead of a rushed decision later.

🌳 Tree Talk Tuesday: Is Your Tree Changing Color Too Soon?

A few yellow leaves aren’t necessarily cause for alarm—but an entire branch or section of canopy changing color in August deserves attention.

Premature color or leaf drop can be associated with several different issues, including:

• Root damage or disturbed soil
• Leaf diseases or insect activity
• Compacted soil and restricted root growth
• General environmental stress
• Problems affecting an individual limb

The pattern often tells us more than the color itself. Is the change happening throughout the whole canopy or only on one side? Are the leaves spotted, curled, scorched around the edges, or simply falling? Is there new branch dieback?

Avoid treating or fertilizing the tree based on color alone. The right response depends on identifying what is actually causing the change.

If your tree appears to be getting an early start on fall, take a few clear pictures and keep an eye on whether the symptoms are spreading. A closer evaluation can help separate a temporary stress response from a developing tree-health problem.

Jordan isn't the only thing sliding down a rope this week!

Using a zipline rigging technique can be great in places with tight drop zones or an area like this where brush would otherwise have to stacked and lifted over the fence.

If you have trees on your yard and no idea how anyone could get them down safely, give us a call at Macomber Tree today. Where there's a will, we have a way! Working safe and keeping your property nice are our top priorities!
