Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance!
We thoroughly grind the concrete slab using a 20" planetary walk-behind floor grinder, and also angle grinders with 7", 5", and/or 4" cup wheels for the edges. The tooling used on the machines consists of man made diamonds infused into metal, which is why the process is called "diamond" grinding.
This process abrades the concrete surface, creating a rough profile for the epoxy to bite in to. The physical bond created (as well as the use of quality materials), is how we are able to warranty our epoxy garage floor installations against any type of adhesion issues, including "hot tire pickup".
Along with creating a rough profile, diamond grinding removes the weaker, top layer of the concrete slab called laitance, to get down to the stronger part of the concrete. This layer of laitence is created during the concrete finishing process, and is typically the cause of a dusty garage floor.
Diamond grinding also removes any contaminants that may have come in contact with the slab since it was poured (spills, paint, etc.), as well as any sealers that may have been applied after the finishing process.
While creating the profile needed for epoxy to properly adhere (and removing the top laitence layer, contaminants, and sealer), diamond grinding also helps flatten the concrete slab. It levels out high spots and smooths finishing flaws. This is especially noticeable when cleaning up the edges with the angle grinders. In most cases, the radius of the stem walls is completely redefined.
This can create the illusion that the thickness of the epoxy coat simply covered these imperfections; When in reality, it's the prep work (including patching) that achieves this look.
