Sprinkler tip #6
What if I have a pump?
There are two types of pumps used for irrigation. A submersible and a centrifugal shallow well jet pump. First let’s talk about Submersible first. A submersible pump is deep in the ground. You may see a white four inch PVC pipe sticking out somewhere in your yard. This is the top of the well and is called a pitiless adapter. The pump itself hangs from a pipe below. You may also have a tank and other well components connected to it. The pump itself is deep enough that it actually sits in water below ground and doesn’t need to be winterized. Everything above ground that is connected will need to be winterized. Most systems set ups will have either a pressure relief valve or a hose bib that you can connect your compressor hose to.

Sprinkler tip #5
Where do I hook up my hose?
This all depends on how your system was originally set up. I’ve seen connection points in every conceivable place you can think of, crawl spaces, garages, in the middle of homes under the stairs, etc. The good news is that when your system was originally installed the company that did the work should have already made that determination for you. There will be a threaded plug or hose bib, somewhere, that you can use if your system needs to winterized, you just have to do some detective work and find it. A good rule of thumb is you want to blow air through any pipe or sprinkler component that is exposed outside your house or within 1 foot of ground level if buried.

Sprinkler tip #4
Sizing your compressor.
Ideally you want a compressor that will get the maximum amount of water out of the system without having an excess of overkill that you don’t need. A lot of it comes down to the size of the system. Ideally what you want is a compressor powerful enough to raise the sprinklers up and keep them up. The problem with the smaller compressor you can rent or buy in local hardware store is they don’t produce enough consistent pressure and need an external air tank to help them build enough pressure to expel the water. Halfway through you will lose your air tank stored pressure and the heads will fall back down before you can get all the water out and you will need to fill the tank with air again before you can proceed further. As a professional I don‘t have the time to waste waiting. With a larger compressor, I can do in 10 minutes what would take me 2 hours with a smaller one. Plus even with attempting to give a section a second shot of air you may not have enough pressure to get the heads to pop back up and then all you can do is hope you got enough water out of the system so if it does freeze it has enough room for expansion without cracking something.
