๐จ SEPTIC MYTH BUSTING! ๐จ
What REALLY belongs down your septic drain?
There are a lot of septic myths out there. Hereโs the truth from the guys who pump them every day! ๐๐จ
๐ข MYTH #1: โIf it flushes, itโs safe for my septic system.โ
โ FALSE! Your toilet isn't a trash can.
โ
Flush: Human waste + toilet paper
๐ซ DONโT FLUSH: Wipes, paper towels, feminine products, diapers, cotton swabs, dental floss, or grease.
๐ข MYTH #2: โFlushable wipes are septic safe.โ
โ MYTH! Even products labeled โflushableโ can cause problems because they don't break down like toilet paper.
๐ Best practice: Trash them.
๐ข MYTH #3: โA garbage disposal is no problem with a septic system.โ
โ ๏ธ NOT EXACTLY. Food waste adds extra solids to your septic tank and can increase the amount of material that needs to be pumped.
๐ If you use a disposal, use it sparingly and consider a sink strainer/composting for food scraps.
๐ข MYTH #4: โSeptic-safe chemicals are always safe in large amounts.โ
โ Nope. Even products marketed as septic-safe can be harmful when used excessively.
๐ซ Avoid dumping paint, solvents, gasoline, pesticides, automotive fluids, or harsh chemicals down the drain.
๐ข MYTH #5: โGrease and cooking oil are liquid, so they can go down the drain.โ
โ BIG MYTH! Grease can solidify and contribute to clogs and buildup.
โ
Let grease cool and put it in the trash.
๐ข MYTH #6: โMore water is better for a septic system.โ
โ Not necessarily. Large amounts of water entering the system at once can overload the tank and drainfield.
โ
Fix leaks and spread out laundry and other heavy water use.
โ
THE SIMPLE RULE:
If you're not sure it belongs in your septic system, DON'T put it down the drain.
Your septic system is designed to handle wastewater, human waste, and toilet paperโnot everything your household can throw away.
