Scott Herman enjoys working with his hands on challenging projects. Growing up in North Topeka, Scott was interested in computer science at Seaman High School. However, a semester of college software engineering classes convinced him otherwise. “It became clear I’d prefer a more skilled trade, so I attended Washburn Tech to learn welding,” Scott said.
“I went to work for a Topeka steel contractor as a welder and machine operator,” Scott said. “For three years I did four 12-hour days a week. I didn’t feel I was going anywhere, I was just running robots.” Scott’s father, a plumbing team leader in a Topeka hospital, told Scott that the people he worked with from McElroy’s seemed happy. He suggested Scott should consider a job there.
Scott went back to Washburn Tech to earn a certificate in HVAC. “Keith Watkins, leader of McElroy’s commercial HVAC service team, visited our class. I interviewed with him and went on a ride along which solidified my choice of career,” Scott said. “When Keith offered me a position, I was excited to get started! One of McElroy’s most experienced techs had just had rotator-cuff surgery. While he recovered for a couple of months, I was his hands. A crash course in old-school techniques like that isn’t found in books! McElroy’s remains a great place to learn and grow.”
In his free time, Scott works on his “project car,” a 1992 Corvette. “I’m doing a lot of tuning and maintenance, like all-new plugs, wires and distributor,” Scott said. He and his girlfriend, Jordyn, a nurse at St. Francis in Topeka, both enjoy video games, and they share three cats.
On May 17, 2026, Scott achieves his fifth anniversary on the McElroy’s team. “I enjoy the challenge of HVAC maintenance and repairs, fixing issues I’ve located. The freedom and rewards of field work beat a factory assembly line any day!” Scott said. We at McElroy’s appreciate Scott’s passion for helping others through his hands and his skills. We encourage him to continue to learn and grow with us for a long time to come!
