4/17/25: Fertilizer applications have come to a hault. Waiting on more fertilizer to come in and a new switch to make my sprayer pump come on.

On another note, If you have irrigation, it should be running regularly at this point. All yards are different but 3-4 times per week for 20-30 minutes per zone is a good place to start. Ideal time of the day for watering at this time of the year is right around day break. The cool mornings still create a situation for disease pressure so not great for water to sit on turf through the night. Timing should be moved to late night (10-11pm) when the cool morning are gone.

Beautiful paver installation. I’ve got a guy for that!!!

Questions I’ve been getting a lot regarding turf:

1) Irrigation. When, how often, and for how long?

The answer: I recommend turning your system off around Thanksgiving and back on around Easter. For the month of March, I would run manual cycles every 5-7 days if we aren’t getting rain. Usually, around 10-15 minutes per zone is plenty for this time of the year. The problem with setting the clock to automatically run one day per week is that we don’t necessarily need water if we get super cold or if it rained a couple days before. March is a month where the temps can be favorable for fungus and being too wet during this time could really cause major disease
in turf. As days get longer and temps increase, irrigation should be set to run automatically and adjusted accordingly so that you aren’t keeping turf too wet.

2) When are you going to fertilize my lawn?

Sometime in early to mid April once we aren’t likely to see another frost. Fertilizing too early is bad for turf. It grows leaf but not roots. It contributes to disease at a time when the turf is susceptible. Weeds are more apt to take up the fertilizer than the turf. The fertilizer is wasted and runs off into non-target areas due to turf not being very efficient at taking it up when turf isn’t really growing yet.
