The smoke pipe, also called the flue pipe, carries dangerous combustion gases from your boiler safely out of your home. Over time, heat, moisture, acidic exhaust, and age can cause the metal to rust from the inside out. Small holes or weak seams may not seem like a big deal, but they can allow carbon monoxide and other exhaust gases to leak into your basement or living space.
In steam and hot water systems, this problem is especially common on older equipment. We often see vent pipes with heavy rust at the joints, missing screws, improper pitch, or signs of water damage from chimney condensation. Sometimes the pipe looks fine from the outside while the interior is badly corroded.
