Steep Hillside Transformation | Built Right the First Time

Not every landscape project is easy and that’s exactly where experience, planning, and the right equipment make the difference.

We were given the opportunity to work with a client’s family member on a very steep hillside in front of their home with extremely difficult access. The area had become heavily overgrown with weeds and shrubs, with very little existing landscaping worth salvaging. We were able to preserve two shrubs, several creeping junipers/groundcover plants, and a Japanese Maple, while completely transforming the rest of the space.

The client provided us with an AI rendering of what they envisioned, and we worked to bring that vision to life while making the necessary adjustments based on the actual conditions of the property and budget.

Our work included:
• Removing overgrown vegetation and unwanted shrubs
• Repairing a section of landscape timbers supporting the existing wall
• Removing shrubs along the home
• Re-rocking all existing landscape beds
• Removing an existing landscape bed and replacing it with fresh topsoil and premium grass seed
• Installing large boulders throughout the steep hillside
• Digging the boulders into the hillside for proper placement, stability, and securement
• Rebuilding the entire area into a functional, finished landscape

This was not an easy site to work on. Getting large boulders safely into position on a steep hillside, achieving proper placement, and working around limited access required careful planning, equipment and experience.

Another backyard transformation by J&J Lawnscapes. 🪨🌿

Sometimes, the biggest difference isn’t adding more to a property — it’s making better use of the space that’s already there.

This backyard had a challenging slope that limited the usable space and left the area lacking the finished look the homeowner wanted. Our team designed and installed a custom natural boulder wall that not only helped create more functional space, but also made the entire backyard more visually appealing from the homeowner’s back porch.

We take a lot of pride in projects like this because the details matter. From the layout and placement of each boulder to the overall shape, grade, and finished appearance, our goal is to make every installation look like it belongs there, not like it was simply placed there.
