🐝 LATE-SUMMER PEST PROBLEMS WE'RE SEEING RIGHT NOW!

Late summer means pest and wildlife activity is in full swing—and our Traverse City team is definitely seeing it!

Just ask our TC technician Brady, who came across a huge stinging insect nest today that was bigger than his head! 😳🐝

That’s a whole lot of wasps!

Late summer is prime time for stinging insect activity because colonies are well established and populations are at their peak. Nests that started small earlier in the season can become surprisingly large by this time of year.

But wasps and hornets aren't the only problems we're seeing:

🦫 WOODCHUCKS & WILDLIFE
Burrows, lawn damage, and wildlife getting into structures are keeping our wildlife team busy.

🐭 RODENTS
As temperatures begin to change, rodents may start looking for warm, protected places to shelter.

🦟 MOSQUITOES & TICKS
We're still seeing plenty of mosquito and tick activity around yards, landscaping, and wooded areas.

🦇 MYTH vs. FACT: Bats Are Blind

MYTH:
"Bats are blind and can't see."

FACT:
Bats can see!

While many bats are nocturnal and use echolocation to navigate and locate insects in the dark, that doesn't mean they can't see. Their vision helps them navigate their surroundings, while echolocation gives them another incredible tool for finding their way and hunting at night.

So why do people say they're "blind"?

The phrase "blind as a bat" probably comes from the fact that bats are most active at night and have adapted to hunt in extremely low-light conditions.

🦇 Fun fact: Not all bats rely on echolocation in the same way. Some fruit-eating bats have excellent vision and rely heavily on sight to find food.

Bats are fascinating animals—and they're also incredibly beneficial to our ecosystem. Many bats eat large numbers of insects every night, helping naturally control insect populations.

🐭 MYTH vs. FACT: Seeing One Mouse Means You Only Have One

MYTH:
"I only saw one mouse, so there's probably just one."

FACT:
Seeing one mouse doesn't necessarily mean there's only one. Mice are excellent at hiding, and they're often most active when you're not around to see them.

If you're spotting a mouse during the day, finding droppings, hearing scratching in the walls, or noticing signs of nesting, there may be more activity happening where you can't see it.

Mice can reproduce quickly, and they don't need much space to get into your home. A gap about the size of a dime can be enough for a mouse to squeeze through.

That's why finding the source of the activity is so important.

Yesterday, our sales team, admin team, and technicians stepped away from the office for a hands-on training day focused on wildlife inspections!

Instead of just talking about wildlife control in a classroom, we got out in the field and walked through an actual inspection together.

Finding a raccoon, squirrel, bat, or other wildlife in your home can be stressful. While trapping and removal can solve the immediate problem, getting the animal out is only part of the solution.

If the entry point is still open, another animal can eventually find its way inside.

That's where wildlife exclusion comes in.

🦟 DID YOU KNOW? — Mosquito Edition

Think you know mosquitoes? Here are a few facts that might surprise you!

1. Only female mosquitoes bite.
Male mosquitoes feed primarily on nectar and other plant sugars. Female mosquitoes need the proteins from a blood meal to help produce eggs.

2. Mosquitoes don't need a pond to reproduce.
Even small amounts of standing water can become a breeding site. Birdbaths, buckets, clogged gutters, flowerpots, and toys can all collect enough water for mosquitoes to lay eggs.

3. Mosquitoes are attracted to more than just your blood.
They can detect carbon dioxide, body heat, and other scents that help them locate people and animals.

4. Mosquitoes love shady areas.
During the heat of the day, they often rest in shrubs, tall grass, landscaping, and other cool, protected areas.

5. Your backyard can be a mosquito hotspot.
Even if you don't have standing water in your yard, mosquitoes can travel in from nearby properties and breeding areas.

The good news? There are ways to reduce mosquito activity around your property.
