🌧️ NORTHERN MICHIGAN HOMEOWNERS: DID TODAY’S STORMS HIT YOUR AREA?

After a storm with strong wind, heavy rain, or hail, it’s worth taking a few minutes to look over what you can safely see from the ground.

Look for:

✔️ Shingles that appear missing or displaced
✔️ Visible damage to shingles or siding
✔️ New debris around the home
✔️ Damaged vents, flashing, or exterior components
✔️ Anything that looks different from before the storm

You don’t need to climb onto your roof to start paying attention to what happened.

And remember, not every sign of storm damage means you need a new roof. The first step is simply understanding what you’re looking at.

🏠 QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD ASK BEFORE HIRING A ROOFING CONTRACTOR

Choosing a roofing contractor is about more than comparing the bottom line on a few estimates.

Before you sign a contract, make sure you understand what you’re actually getting, who is doing the work, and what happens if something doesn’t go as planned.

Here are some questions worth asking:

1️⃣ What are you recommending, and why?
A good contractor should be able to explain what they found and why they’re recommending a particular solution, not just tell you that you need a new roof.

2️⃣ What specific materials and products will be used?
Ask about the manufacturer, shingle/product line, underlayment, ventilation components, flashing, and other important roofing materials. “A new roof” doesn’t tell you much about what is actually being installed.

3️⃣ What exactly is included in my estimate?
Make sure you understand what’s included in the quoted price and what could result in additional costs.

4️⃣ What happens if damaged sheeting is found?
This is an important one. Ask how damaged or deteriorated sheeting is handled, how replacement is priced, and how you’ll be informed if additional work is needed.

5️⃣ Who will actually perform and oversee the work?
Find out who will be working on your home and who is responsible for overseeing the project from start to finish.

6️⃣ What warranties come with the project?
Ask what warranties apply, who provides them, what they cover, how long they last, and whether there are any maintenance or installation requirements that could affect coverage.

7️⃣ What happens if I have a problem after the project is completed?
Ask who you contact, how problems are handled, and what the process looks like if something needs to be addressed after the crew leaves.

And one of our favorite questions to ask a contractor:

“If this were your home, what would you do?”

You don’t have to be a roofing expert to make an informed decision.
You just need to ask the right questions.

Finished Project Friday 🏠

This Northern Michigan home just got a fresh new roof featuring GAF - Roofing Timberline HDZ shingles in Hickory.

The dimensional color variation in the Hickory blend gives the roof a warm, natural look while adding some really nice depth to the finished exterior.

From tear-off and installation to the finished roof, every detail matters when it comes to protecting your home from Northern Michigan’s weather.

🏡 WHY DOES VINYL SIDING SOMETIMES GET LOOSE?

If you’ve ever noticed a piece of vinyl siding that seems to be pulling away from the wall, you’re not alone.

Vinyl siding is designed to move as temperatures change. During Northern Michigan’s hot summers and cold winters, that expansion and contraction can put movement into the siding system.

Loose siding can also be related to things such as:

✔ Installation
✔ Damage
✔ Fastening issues
✔ Weather exposure

A loose panel doesn’t automatically mean the entire siding system needs to be replaced.

The first step is understanding why it became loose and whether anything else around it has been affected.

Sometimes what’s happening beneath the shingles matters just as much as what you can see on top.

Water travels across the shingles and toward areas designed to direct it away, including valleys and the lower edges of the roof.

That’s why details like:

✔ Properly installed shingles
✔ Flashing
✔ Roof valleys
✔ Underlayment
✔ Proper water drainage

all play a role in keeping water where it belongs: outside your home.

Heavy rain can also reveal problems that weren’t obvious during dry weather. A small weakness in the roofing system can become much more noticeable when it’s handling a large amount of water.
