Got 3-tab shingles? Most people never see what's underneath. Wood moves with the weather, and nails work loose over time. When a nail backs out, it pushes the shingle up.

Your shingles are the top layer, but they're not doing it alone. Under them is the backup that keeps water out.

Up here, from Traverse City to Petoskey, winter tests every layer. If you've ever seen icicles hanging off your roof edge, that can be a sign. Heat leaking from the attic melts the snow, the water runs down to the cold edge and refreezes, and that's how an ice dam starts.

Please check your roof from the ground and never climb an icy one. No shingle is worth that.
