Northern Michigan exterior season is officially underway.

We’re kicking things off on beautiful Big Glen Lake in Glen Arbor, and honestly… it feels good to be back outside. Fresh air, lake views, ladders everywhere, and another season of transforming homes across Northern Michigan.

We’ve got some incredible projects lined up this year and we’re looking forward to sharing the journey along the way. Let’s make it a great season. ☀️🏡

Old Mission kitchen project moving right along. Containment is up, the process is rolling, and now we’re into the fine details that slowly bring everything together. The little things add up fast on projects like these. 👌

Little behind the scenes from the new shop.

We’re finally starting to get settled in, get things organized, and turn this place into home base for Grand Traverse Custom Coatings. Between the move and wrapping up these last couple projects, it’s been nonstop around here lately. Dust, ladders, coffee, repeat. 😂

We’ve been a little quiet on content the last couple weeks, but that’s about to change. We’ve got some really fun projects coming up and we’ll be bringing you guys along for all of it. More cabinet work, more interiors, more exteriors, more process videos, more chaos.

Appreciate everybody following along and supporting the growth of Grand Traverse Custom Coatings. Big things ahead.

Another kitchen cabinet + bathroom vanity project rolling right along. 🔥

We’re wrapping up interior season with a bang and honestly… we’re about ready to get outside again 😂☀️

Prep is up. Everything’s been thoroughly sanded. Dust control in place. Now it’s time for primer and the real transformation to begin.

The finish always gets the attention, but the prep is what makes it last. That’s where the magic happens. 👊

Some projects go exactly how you planned…
and then some like to test your character a little 😅

This one? Yeah… it had a few surprises hiding under that thermofoil. And that’s the thing… we’ve done plenty of these, but you never really know what’s waiting underneath until you’re in it.

Good news is we’re in the home stretch. One final sand + clean, then laying down the last coat of Renner 765 and calling it done.

Not gonna lie, this one earned its stripes. Looking forward to getting these back to the client looking right.

P.S. Thermofoil removals… still doing them… just gonna cost a little more now 😂

Hand sanding with a block is one of the best ways to get a surface truly flat, especially in detailed areas where machines can’t quite hit right. It keeps pressure even across the surface so you’re not leaving waves or low spots.

We use this a lot on edges, profiles, and anywhere that needs that extra level of control before coatings go on. It’s a slower step, but it’s what helps everything lay down clean in the end.

These don’t just feel rough… they look rough the second you see them.

Heavy texture, uneven surfaces, flaws everywhere. The kind of doors where if you tried to just “paint over it,” it would look even worse.

So instead of hiding it, we rebuild it.

Every door gets skimmed out with Bondo spot putty — not to bury the problem, but to level everything out completely. Then we come back and sand off about 80% of it, leaving only what’s needed to create a flat, uniform surface.

It’s a back-and-forth process. Fill, sand, check it. Then do it again until it’s right.

Suttons Bay project update.

The house is fully protected and ready for the next stage. Countertops, floors, walls, fixtures, and every surface not being painted has been carefully covered. Zip walls are up in each room, creating sealed spray areas so the rest of the home stays clean and protected while we work.

All sanding is complete, and today we’re moving into two full coats of primer on the laundry room cabinets, bathroom vanities, and built-in dressers. Once that primer has time to cure, we’ll go back through and start addressing every little flaw, dent, seam, and imperfection that shows itself.

Primer has a funny way of telling the truth. The moment it goes on, every tiny detail suddenly has nowhere to hide. That’s when the real work begins, and that’s exactly why we take our time here before a single finish coat is sprayed.

Thermofoil wrap is officially gone.

Every door and drawer front is now stripped down, hung in the shop, and ready for the next step.

These old thermofoil cabinets were failing, peeling, and lifting in multiple areas. Once that wrap starts letting go, there’s no real fixing it. So we take it all the way back and build it back the right way.

Next up: three full coats of primer to seal these MDF doors and create the foundation for a finish that actually lasts. The flashy before-and-after is fun, but this is the part that makes all the difference.

One layer at a time.
