If you are spotting mushrooms growing at the base of your trees, it is time to pay close attention.

These fungi are not just growing on the bark—they are feeding on it. In the tree world, mushrooms at the base or on the trunk are often the fruiting bodies of root or heart rot. This means fungus is actively breaking down the wood from the inside out, which can severely compromise the structural integrity of your tree.

Because the decay happens internally, a tree can look perfectly healthy with lush green leaves on top, even while it is rotting at the core.

Check for other signs. Look for dead branches, peeling bark, or a sudden lean in the tree. Internal decay makes trees unstable and highly susceptible to falling during storms.

Keep your home and yard safe! Give us a call or send us a message today to schedule an inspection!

Mushrooms at the base of the tree trunk can indicate big problems. They can be the sign of armillaria root rot or other fungi which kill trees (See: armillaria mushroom close-up). Once you see the mushroom like that shown below the decay fungus has established itself inside the roots and trunk.

Knowing the trees in your yard isn't just fun—it's essential for property safety! Some are local icons of the South, while others are "ticking time bombs" that need a professional eye.
Here is how to spot the "Big Four":

1. Southern Live Oak: The undisputed monarch! Identify them by their massive, winding branches often draped in Spanish moss. Their leaves are small, stiff, and leathery, with a pale, slightly fuzzy underside. These are extraordinarily strong and can live for centuries.

2. Laurel Oak: Often mistaken for the Live Oak, but look at the bark—Laurel Oaks have much smoother bark with shallow splits as they age. Their leaves are consistently narrow and shiny on both sides. Warning: These are fast-growing but short-lived (50–70 years) and prone to internal rot and snapping.

3. Water Oak: These have unique spoon-shaped or spatula-shaped leaves. Like Laurel Oaks, they grow quickly but are prone to decay and hollow trunks once they hit their 50s.

4. Sweetgum: Easy to spot by their star-shaped leaves and "gumball" fruit—those prickly brown seed balls that cover the ground. These trees grow rapidly and have a high tendency to snap in high winds, especially if they’ve grown toward the sunlight over your roof.

Safety Check: If you see mushrooms at the base, thinning canopies, or "widow maker" dead limbs in your Laurel or Water Oaks, don't wait for the next Florida storm!.
