Before you call for service, run through these quick checks.

A dirty filter, a blocked vent, or a simple thermostat issue can cause your AC to stop cooling without any mechanical problem at all.

Check your filter first. If it is gray and clogged, replace it. Make sure all your supply vents are open and nothing is blocking them. Check that your thermostat is set to COOL and the temperature is below room temperature.

If none of that helps, turn the system off for 30 minutes to let it reset. If it still is not cooling after that, it is time to call a technician.

It sounds backwards, but your AC can freeze up in the middle of summer.

When airflow is blocked or refrigerant levels drop, ice builds up on the evaporator coils. The result? Your system stops cooling, and the longer it runs, the worse it gets.

If you notice warm air coming from your vents or ice forming around your unit, turn the system off and call a technician. Running a frozen system can cause serious damage.
