Exciting progress is underway in Hudson, New York, as the groundbreaking officially took place last week for a new 18-bed men’s residential recovery facility. The Recovery Residence for men in the Town of Greenport will expand the continuum of substance-use recovery housing offered by Twin County Recovery Services, a Hudson-based nonprofit that provides outpatient treatment, residential recovery programs, prevention services, and family support throughout the region. The new Greenport residence will provide a safe, supervised, recovery-oriented environment focused on long-term sobriety, life-skills development, peer support, and reintegration into the community. Twin County’s residential model emphasizes trauma-informed care, accountability, counseling, vocational support, and stable housing as essential components of sustained recovery for individuals affected by substance use disorders.

architecture+ is immensely proud of the work accomplished over the past six years to modernize psychiatric facilities across the state of Texas. In collaboration with the Texas Health & Human Services Commission and partner firms HKS and Stantec, we have completed multiple projects totaling over 700 beds, with several additional facilities currently underway. Texas continues to make meaningful investments in behavioral healthcare, and we’re so grateful for the opportunity to contribute to these important efforts.

Renu Razdan, Director of Maintenance & Construction for the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, said: “architecture+ will always be part of this journey … part of HHSC’s history. Your team has set the standards for HHSC. We are really proud to have these facilities and it would not have happened without you all!!”

San Antonio State Hospital: 300 beds, adult and forensic (Partner Firm: HKS)
Inspired by the historic San Antonio River, the design emphasized healing through comfort, hope, and innovative care environments guided by the primary needs of both patients and caregivers. The resulting hospital is a secure environment that supports holistic recovery with a contemporary, spacious, and intuitive atmosphere.

Rusk State Hospital: 200 beds, adult and maximum security (Partner Firm: HKS)
This thoughtfully designed facility features single-person rooms, abundant natural light, and outdoor spaces to promote healing and recovery. The hospital offers a variety of therapeutic, recreational, and social experiences to prepare patients for life outside the hospital.

Austin: 240 beds, adult and geriatric (Partner Firm: Stantec)
The new 3-story Austin State Hospital is designed to support individuals living with serious mental illness with both short- and long-term care options, serving a diverse population of civil and justice-involved patients. Our team led the programming effort, planning, and interior design that shaped the patient environments, balancing safety, dignity, and recovery.

architecture+ was proud to celebrate this morning’s ribbon cutting for the new Capital Region Music Hub at the historic Troy Savings Bank Music Hall! For four years, our team has been honored to lead this multi-million-dollar renovation of a National Historic Landmark, renowned for its extraordinary acoustics and legacy of world-class performances.

Our design professionals, expert consultants, and construction partners worked closely with the Music Hall’s team on two transformative initiatives: the installation of a new ventilation and cooling system enabling year-round performances, maximizing comfort, and improving energy conservation; and the adaptive reuse of the original bank floor to create the Music Hub—a dynamic event space with adjacent lounges, classrooms, and studio. A newly designed ceiling system preserves and enhances the main hall’s celebrated acoustics while reducing sound transfer between performance spaces. The box office and entry was expanded to include a bar, coat room, buffet counter, and welcoming seating areas. Throughout the renovations, original historic features such as decorative trim, moldings, and casework, were carefully preserved or repurposed to honor the building's architectural character and protect its enduring legacy.

“As we celebrate the grand opening of the Capital Region Music Hub, we are not only honoring the rich history of the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, but also investing in its future. This project ensures that generations to come will have access to arts, education and community space right here in the Capital Region. I am proud to have helped coordinate and deliver state funding allocations for this historic project.” John McDonald III, New York State Assemblymember, said.

The project was supported by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), Empire State Development (ESD), as well as private donations. The Music Hall will hold its official grand opening on Saturday, May 23rd.

50 years of compassionate care deserves a space that reflects it.

We're proud to have designed the new home of The Family Counseling Center, a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) providing comprehensive mental health, substance use disorder treatment, and social services to the residents of Fulton County, New York.

Through thoughtful renovation and a new addition to the existing facility, architecture+ created a single, unified center that replaced four separate locations. Every decision was guided by one principle: each person who walks through the door should feel safe and supported. The result is a space designed around people with natural light, carefully considered privacy, dedicated entrances for staff, clients, and individuals in crisis, and community event space that brings people together.

And the work continues. The Center is currently adding a dedicated room for children, in honor of former client Bailey Field, which provides a calming, sensory-rich environment with interactive elements designed to support emotional regulation during a crisis.

Congratulations to the Family Counseling Center on 50 years of service. We are honored to help them build the spaces where healing happens.

At the Southeast Psychiatric Treatment Center in Norristown, PA, architecture+ and partner firm Stantec are redefining forensic mental healthcare through compassionate, forward-thinking design. The new 420-bed hospital will significantly expand regional capacity for assessment and treatment of individuals intersecting with the judicial and corrections systems. This directly addresses the projected surge in demand for forensic beds over the next two decades.

A dedicated unit will serve medically frail/geriatric patients with co-occurring behavioral and physical health needs, streamlining the path to admission and meaningfully reducing wait times for those requiring additional care.

Developed in close collaboration with the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services and Norristown State Hospital, the design is rooted in a trauma-informed framework that prioritizes holistic healing, staff well-being, and long-term building adaptability. The result will be a facility built not just for today's needs, but resilient enough to evolve alongside the communities it serves.

Patient units are thoughtfully situated to promote privacy and healing, balancing tranquility and consideration for nearby communities. Inside, the design draws inspiration from the adjacent Norristown Farm Park with its wooded landscapes and open agricultural fields translated into an interior environment that feels restorative, grounded, and connected to nature.

Phase 1 of the project, encompassing 270 beds, is currently out to bid.

Compassionate care starts with thoughtful design.

We're proud to share our work on the Franklin County Crisis Care Center, a 24/7 facility in Columbus, OH providing adults in mental health or addiction-related crises with a place to stabilize, heal, and connect to ongoing care.

Working alongside the Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Board (ADAMH) of Franklin County and partner firm NBBJ, our team prioritized the needs of both patients and staff at every step. The result is a warm, dignified environment filled with natural light and biophilic elements that support healing and wellbeing and creates a bridge to long-term recovery.

The Center includes:
— 60 Adult 23-Hour Observation Unit beds
— 16 Extended Observation Unit beds
— Inpatient neighborhood unit
— Walk-in clinic, therapy spaces, lobby, dining, and full administrative support

At the ribbon cutting ceremony, Erika Clark Jones, CEO of ADAMH addressed the crowd with a clear message: mental health is health.
“Together, we believe one thing: that we can, and we must, do better for individuals and families experiencing mental health and addiction crises,” Erika said. “Crisis care must be equitable and accessible. This is more than a facility. It’s a promise to our community that those in crisis will be met with dignity, care, and hope.”

Today marks the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Month—a focus that is central to the work we do at architecture+. This month, we're launching Mental Health Mondays. Every week in May, we'll spotlight a different mental health project from our portfolio and the stories behind the spaces that are designed to support care, recovery, safety and well-being.

We are immensely proud of our ongoing work and deep dedication to this specialized practice, having designed over 25,000 beds—more than any other firm in North America.

This commitment extends beyond our projects. In conjunction with the New York State Office of Mental Health, our Patient Safety Team develops, updates, and publishes the Patient Safety Standards, Materials and Systems Guidelines. This work helps advance safer, more effective care settings for both patients and staff.

We look forward to sharing our work.
