Healing is different for kids and their spaces for recovery should be too.

Designed to encourage play, joy, and creativity, the pediatric units at Southeast Michigan Psychiatric Center give children room to explore, imagine, and just be kids.

Playful details, Michigan wildflower graphics at a child’s eye level, and opportunities for both indoor and outdoor play create a welcoming environment where fun and activity are part of the experience of care.

As the mental/behavioral design consultant, architecture+ was proud to design the patient interior spaces and graphics for this project. Designing patient rooms that protect and comfort.

In a psychiatric hospital, the patient bedroom and bathroom may be the most important spaces to get right. They need to be safe and durable, and also feel like a place where someone can rest and begin to feel like themselves again. When the design is approached thoughtfully and intentionally, safety and beauty can go hand in hand to support each other.

At the Southeast Michigan Psychiatric Center, our team designed the patient bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms with both goals in mind. Warm, residential finishes, dimmable accent lighting, and stencil-applied custom wildflower artwork come together to create a calm, welcoming setting for respite and reflection. The ensuite bathrooms pair a calm, spa-like feel with rigorous patient safety standards. Best of all, the bathrooms were prefabricated off site, which brought consistent quality, faster installation, and less disruption, while meeting the demands of a health care environment.

Exciting news! Design in Mental Health Network – North America (DiMHN-NA) has launched!

DiMNH-NA is a new charitable network dedicated to improving mental health environments through collaboration, shared learning, and better design. It brings together people with lived experience, clinicians, architects, designers, researchers, health systems, facilities professionals, manufacturers, industry partners, and policymakers who share a common belief: The environment is part of the experience of care. Better environments create better opportunities for dignity, safety, connection, healing, and recovery.

This Network isn't about one profession having all the answers. It's about bringing together different perspectives, challenging assumptions, sharing evidence, and learning from one another so we can create environments that better support the people who receive care and the people who provide it.

A new approach to mental health care for Michigan begins here.

Last week, the Southeast Michigan Psychiatric Center officially completed construction and marked the milestone with a dedication ceremony attended by the project team and public leaders.

As mental health design partner on this 264-bed hospital serving both children and adults, the architecture+ team planned and designed all interior patient spaces and created the project’s custom graphics.

The interior design draws on the growth and reflection of nature, from seed to sprout to full bloom. Wildflowers native to Michigan guide the experience, supporting a welcoming, compassionate environment for both patients and staff.

The project reflects a belief that personal growth is nurtured through both individual experience and collective support. We’re grateful to DTMB, DHHS, Integrated Design Solutions, Beckett & Raeder, Inc., The Christman Company, and everyone who made it possible.

The Homeless and Travelers Aid Society (HATAS) is a vital organization that prevents, reduces, and combats homelessness in the Capital Region through community support, housing programs, and other specialized services. HATAS addresses the short-term needs for shelter, food, and basic support while never losing sight of the more permanent need for affordable housing, employment, food security, education, treatment, and a general sense of well-being. We stand with HATAS in believing that every person has a human right to safe and affordable housing.
