Every kind of crane work has a season down here. Most people find that out the hard way.

October through April
Average highs drop to 86° by October and keep falling. This is the window for long structural sets, steel, and trusses, where crews are on the site all day.

April
Typically the windiest month of the year in Tucson. Wind governs tall boom work more than anything else does. Build slack into anything running high.

May into early June
Driest stretch of the year, averaging under a tenth of an inch of rain. Firm ground and predictable days. It closes June 15 when monsoon starts.

Mid June through September
Monsoon. Early starts, buffer days, and a hard look at the ground before setup.

June through August
Highs run 98° to 101°. This is when rooftop and cooling equipment fails, so the work is urgent instead of planned.

Two inches of rain in an hour does not just cost you a day; it changes the job site.

Graded lots hold water. Wash crossings soften. Fill that compacted hard in May gives under an outrigger in August. A crane needs firm, level ground under every pad, and after a monsoon storm that is a judgment call somebody has to make standing on the dirt.

We run 14 cranes, so we bring the one that suits the ground instead of the one that happens to be free. Operators are NCCCO and MSHA certified. We have been setting up on Southern Arizona sites since 1978, wet and dry.

The crane is usually the easy part.

The hard part is a commercial oven wedged where nothing was designed to lift it. Machinery that has to come out of a building through an opening smaller than the machine. A load that has to stay level the entire way or it is scrap when it lands. A packaged unit that has to come off a flatbed and land level on a pad.

One customer had a commercial oven stuck on an elephant stand. We were there within two and a half hours of the call.

That is rigging, and it is a separate skill from running a crane. Our staff includes riggers, drivers, and job coordinators, not just operators. Rigging is one of the four things we build the fleet around, not an add-on to a crane rental.

If something has to come out, go in, or move across a plant floor, the rigging plan determines whether it survives.

Roughly 90% of Arizona's lightning falls in July, August, and September. Towers sit in the open and take all of it.

Storm season is when antennas get replaced, radios get swapped, and mounted equipment comes down for repair. The height is what complicates this type of job.

That is what boom length buys you. Reach means the hook gets where the equipment actually is, and it means the crane can sit somewhere safe and stable instead of crowded up against the base of a tower. On a caliche pad at the end of a dirt road outside Willcox or Safford, that difference decides whether the job happens that day.

Our fleet tops out at 165 tons with 260 feet of boom and jib, with 90 and 130 ton machines in between. Cell towers are one of the four things we build the fleet around. Operators are NCCCO and MSHA certified, which matters when the site sits on mine or utility property.

Not every lift happens on an open job site. Sometimes the load is a piece of machinery wedged into a spot it was never meant to leave, and the clock is running.

Arizona's power demand peaks in the summer. The state's utilities set new record highs again last year as cooling load climbed across the region.
That keeps power and water infrastructure running hard. Transformers, generators, and well pumping equipment get placed and swapped, and a lot of that work sits on regulated industrial ground.
