With spring weather comes an increased need for citrus tree care. The most important spring citrus tree care tasks include changing watering schedules, applying fertilizer and mulch, treating pests and disease, and light pruning. Trees should be watered deeply and slowly in the early morning hours to prevent evaporation. The roots should be fertilized in early and late spring, and three to four inches of mulch should be applied around the base of the tree, but at least three inches away from the trunk. Regularly inspect trees for signs of aphids, whiteflies, ants, and scale. Lightly prune the trees in early spring, removing dead, damaged, or diseased wood as well as rootstock suckers.
