Day one of this backyard, and nothing's going up yet. About a week of demo before the steel porch and patio can even start — old material out, ground cleared, everything reset so what gets built sits on something solid. Homeowners always underestimate this stage because there's nothing to look at. A decade in this trade and it's the part we won't rush. Build on a bad base and you'll see it in the posts, the drainage, and the way it holds up a few years in. Right now it looks like a mess. Follow for the glow up

If nobody told you to insulate your metal building, they were making the bid look cheaper. Bare steel in Tucson turns into an oven — it pulls heat in all day and holds it, so inside ends up hotter than outside. Then winter hits and it's the opposite problem, because there's nothing in those walls to keep anything in. Years of building steel structures here, and we've watched plenty of people realize this in July, after it's framed and skinned and the fix costs real money. Insulation isn't the upgrade. It's the difference between a building you can use and a building you can only store things in.

Nobody posts the demo and excavation stage, but it decides how the whole patio turns out. Before anything gets built, the old surface comes out, the ground gets dug to depth, and the grade gets set so water runs away from the house instead of toward it. A decades in this trade and we've seen what happens when a crew skips this part to get to the fun stuff — settling, cracking, standing water after the first real monsoon. The patio you'll see in a few weeks is already being decided right here.

Most homeowners don't think about a permit until they're selling the house and an inspector flags the patio. In general, anything over 200 square feet needs one — but honestly, it's worth pulling either way. A permitted structure means it was inspected, it's on record, and it doesn't turn into a problem at closing or with your insurance after a storm. A decade in this trade as a full-service GC, and we handle that side so you're not guessing. The contractor who tells you not to bother is protecting their schedule, not your house.

Backyard projects usually get split between three different companies — one for the steel, one for the fencing, one for the landscaping and the homeowner ends up managing all of it.
This one's a steel patio cover, a steel pool gate, and sod, handled under one roof. Decades in this trade as a full-service GC means the schedule stays coordinated and the details match from one piece to the next.

Nobody in Tucson needs convincing about the sun. What they don't always realize is what it's doing to everything parked under it — dashboards cracking, clear coat fading, seals drying out, equipment sitting in 160-degree heat every afternoon. That's the conversation that starts most of these jobs. Decades in this trade building carports, RV covers, steel buildings and porches, and it always comes down to the same thing: cover it now, or replace it later. Shade is the cheapest protection you can put over something expensive.

Cut the budget anywhere in your kitchen except here. Cabinets are the thing people go cheap on, and they're the thing that fails first. That bargain set is particleboard with a pretty face — it soaks up moisture, sags, swells, and the doors stop closing right within a couple years. No soft-close, no solid boxes, no lifespan. We've torn out enough "great deals" to know exactly how this ends. Good cabinets aren't where you save money in a remodel. They're the entire reason the remodel lasts.

Nothing's wrong. I'm perfectly fine. But somewhere down the line, when the kitchen finally gets on your nerves — the layout that never worked, the cabinets from three owners ago — I'd like to be the name that comes to mind. That's all. Just keep me in your thoughts. Preferably around the time you're staring at that backsplash wondering how much longer you can live with it.
