The Google soundstage project placed a new production facility inside the historic Southern California hangar where Howard Hughes built the H-4 Hercules, better known as the Spruce Goose.

WWS’s scope extended well beyond supplying timber trusses. We designed and fabricated the trusses, coordinated shipping to California, received and unloaded the materials, and assembled the trusses on-site.

Working within an existing historic building made planning, logistics, and installation sequencing essential. Despite this challenge, we completed the work one month ahead of schedule.

106 feet of timber suspended through the trees.

This 8' x 106' timber suspension bridge at the Oregon Zoo was designed to enhance it's natural setting, carrying visitors through the surrounding forest with timber incorporated prominently throughout the structure.

It's an example from our archives of a specialty Western Wood Structures has developed over decades. WWS has designed and supplied more than 5,000 timber bridges since 1969.

From the WWS Archive: A roof geometry designed to break away from the expected.

At the 21st Century Golf Club House in Tokyo, two reverse-curved radial rib domes create the building’s distinctive roof forms. What makes the geometry especially interesting is that the center circle of each dome is not concentric with the outer circle, so the radial members are intentionally unequal.

That irregular geometry carries through to the exposed timber structure inside, where the ribs converge around the central opening to create a dramatic ceiling pattern.

Western Wood Structures prepared the wood and steel fabrication details and supplied the timber members and steel assemblies for the project back in 2001.

A great example of how precise timber fabrication can turn unconventional geometry into a defining architectural feature.

This 8’ wide by 62’ long bridge in Tarkio, Montana, was designed and fabricated by Western Wood Structures. It’s a steel girder bridge design with a timber deck and timber rail systems. Inaccessible by vehicle, this bridge required a helicopter to lift the beams into place and lift the other smaller components nearby.

Using a helicopter requires significant planning, as the contractor gets one shot to move everything. Oregon Woods Inc. deserves full credit for the installation.

From the WWS shop: timber projects start taking shape long before they reach the jobsite.

Large-scale fabrication means working through geometry, member fit, connections, and constructability at full scale. Here, timber assemblies take over the shop floor before the finished members are wrapped, loaded, and prepared for the next stage of construction.

It is one of the less-visible parts of timber construction, but careful shop work can make all the difference when installation begins in the field.

The Hiroshima Airport Bridge in Japan shows just how far engineered timber can be pushed when structural design, connections, fabrication, and material supply are treated as one coordinated system.

The bridge uses thirteen parallel-chord timber truss sections supported by a cable-stayed system between two reinforced-concrete towers. Its main clear span measures 273 feet. Completed in 1995, this was the first cable-stayed highway bridge in Japan to feature a timber superstructure.

Western Wood Structures designed the timber trusses, timber deck and rail system, along with the cable components. WWS also prepared the wood and steel fabrication details and supplied the timber members and steel assemblies.

Projects like this are a reminder that timber bridge engineering is rarely about the wood alone. The performance of the structure depends on how timber, steel, cables, connections and fabrication details work together.

The Beacon Hill Library pairs expressive wood construction with a sweeping roof designed to bring natural light into the building.☀️

Western Wood Structures was proud to contribute to the project by supplying custom glulam beams and heavy timber structural elements. The exposed wood complements the stone and other natural materials used throughout the library, creating a warm and distinctive public space that continues to serve the Beacon Hill community more than two decades later. 🌲📚

The library, designed by Carlson Architects, officially opened 22 years ago in July 2004.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about watching a CLT panel settle perfectly into place. 🏗️🪵

This construction footage captures Western Wood Structures’ crew installing CLT roof panels at the University of Portland’s Joe Etzel Baseball Field back in 2019. Each carefully coordinated lift brought another piece of the mass timber structure together. ⚾

WWS served as the mass timber subcontractor and provided a turnkey solution that included material supply, in-house shop work, and installation.

Completed in 2019, the renovation of Joe Etzel Baseball Field gave the University of Portland Pilots baseball program a fresh new look with at the center of the design.

The project included a new press box, entry canopy, restrooms, home dugout, visitor dugout, and other facility improvements. Exposed CLT panels were incorporated throughout the ballpark, adding warmth, character, and a distinctive wood aesthetic for players and fans.

Western Wood Structures served as the mass timber subcontractor and provided a turnkey solution that included material supply, in-house shop work, and installation.

Designed to meet rapidly growing healthcare needs, this 84,000-square-foot facility’s mass timber construction creates a warm and welcoming environment.

Western Wood Structures worked alongside the contractor and design team to help integrate the tolerances of wood and steel, constructability, glulam-to-steel connections, and a moisture management plan.

It doesn't have to be steel or mass timber. The smartest structures combine both.
