Signs You May Need A New Roof: Granule Loss

Granular loss usually happens due to weathering or age, but it can also be caused by physical damage to the shingles.

It may not seem like a big deal but granule loss means your roof is not protecting you at full strength.

Granule loss makes your roof more vulnerable to things like UV exposure and extreme temperatures. This can lead to the shingles breaking down even faster, which will diminish the lifespan of your roof.

Additionally, the granular loss can leave your shingles more vulnerable to physical damage. This is because the granules help to protect the shingles from things like hail and debris. Without them, the shingles are more likely to be damaged, which can lead to leaks and other costly issues.

Signs You May Need A New Roof: Moss or Algae On Your Roof

When moss or algae growth is left unchecked, it becomes a heavy blanket on top of your roof that retains water and moisture and can lead to rot, bacteria, and mold growth. While not a notable concern for your health, this growth can shorten your roof's lifespan significantly.

Roof mold also is an invitation to rodents and other animals who feed off the mold and roofing materials.

Signs You May Need A New Roof: Ceiling Stains

If you start to notice slight water stains in the ceiling of one or more rooms in your home, it's very likely the culprit is a leaky roof.

Ceiling stains are often a symptom of a deeper 'roof health' issue and you should waste no time in getting an inspection schedule with your contractor. Some common causes are degraded shingles, compromised flashings, or weakened seals around roof vents.

Waiting to address the root cause of the roof leak could lead to greater, more costly damage to your home. Don't delay!

Signs You May Need A New Roof: Curled Shingles

Many property owners people believe that curled shingles occur as a result of what can be brutal summer temps in this part of the country. But that's only partially true.

While heat does play a role, curled shingles are a result of inadequate attic ventilation that essentially 'cook' shingles from the INSIDE out, resulting in the curled shingles you see below.

An imbalance in ventilation can destroy a roof far more quickly than external heat itself. Ensure you have a proper ventilation assessment completed when you have our roof replaced!

A GAF Roof System is more than just shingles, it’s a system built to protect. Last week we focused on Shingles. This week we look at the last component - Attic Ventilation.

What happens if a roof is not properly ventilated?

Poor ventilation might cause attic temperatures to rise to extremes, especially in the summer. That can lead to damaged shingles and other roofing materials as well as a buildup of condensation and the development of mildew and mold, degrading the effectiveness and lifespan of your new roof system.

In turn, this will force you to incur the costs of a new roof far sooner than if the system was properly ventilated.

Don't mess around! Ensure you have a ventilation assessment performed as part of your roof inspection!

A GAF Roof System is more than just shingles, it’s a system built to protect. Last week we focused on Underlayment. This week we look at Shingles

Shingles are obviously the most visible part of your roof system and come with some important questions. Should you get a standard shingle? How about a designer shingle to boost curb appeal? What about a Class IV (4) shingle? What's the difference?

Decisions abound!

The best thing to do is discuss the various types of shingles available for the roof system you choose with your contractor and, as always, pick the style and color that compliments the rest of your home and property. Not only do shingles provide rooftop protection, but they also are a huge factor in curb appeal - which can affect resale value!

Storm Readiness Tip #4: Put Together a "To-Do" Checklist

After finding and vetting your contractor and understanding what might lie ahead should you need restoration work completed, you should make a simple checklist of key tasks to accomplish if and when you need it.

Include key contacts in your list, such as your insurance agent, and contractor as well as laying out important steps to take. It will prove an immeasurable help in navigating the normally stressful restoration process.
