Prevent those w**ds

I use Specticle FLO because one of my main goals is to prevent as much Poa annua as possible.

Mix rate: Specticle FLO — 3.5 oz per acre.

I know Specticle can be pricey upfront for most homeowners. Prodiamine is a more affordable option and can still help prevent many w**ds like henbit and other winter/spring w**ds. For Poa annua, though, I prefer Specticle FLO.

Spraying w**d control on fescue

Mix rate:
• Quinclorac — 1.45 oz per 1,000 sq. ft.
• Sulfentrazone — 0.2 oz per 1,000 sq. ft.
• Surfactant — 1 oz per 2–3 gallons of water

I use surfactant in this mix for the quinclorac. Even though adding surfactant with sulfentrazone can increase the chance of turf discoloration, I haven’t had issues with my applications.

I tested this mix on fescue and it did well. There may have been a very slight tip burn, but it was barely noticeable and recovered quickly.

I was confident in my calibration, and this particular lawn was going to be seeded anyway, so I wasn’t too concerned about temporary discoloration. Overall, the test did well.

Crabgrass grass likes to stick around

Mix rate:
Quinclorac — 1.45 oz per 1,000 sq. ft.
Sulfentrazone — 0.2 oz per 1,000 sq. ft.

I do add surfactant because of the quinclorac. I use about 1 oz per 2–3 gallons of water.

Crabgrass likes to stick around until the first frost, and it can get annoying because you have to keep mowing it repeatedly.

If you have Bermuda, controlling the crabgrass and fertilizing can help give the Bermuda room to fill back in.

We’re getting toward the end of the growing season, but controlling the crabgrass now can still help keep you from mowing it over and over into the fall.

• Quinclorac — 1.45 oz per 1,000 sq. ft.
• Surfactant — 1 oz per 2–3 gallons of water

Surfactant with sulfentrazone can increase the risk of turf discoloration, but because I was also using quinclorac, I included a surfactant in this application.

I wasn’t too concerned about temporary discoloration on this particular lawn because it was roughly 90% crabgrass with Bermuda scattered throughout.

I also applied nitrogen to help push the existing Bermuda and give it a chance to fill in as the crabgrass dies back.
