FAQ: What should I add to our tank to keep it performing well?
Answer: There are three layers within your septic tank’s contents: scum, liquid, and sludge. Adding anything to “break things down” hurts your system. Everything sinks and floats as it should until an additive breaks your solids down to the point they achieve a neutral buoyancy, (neither sink nor float) which allows those small particles to mix in the liquid portion and exit in to your drainfield. Once it reaches its endpoint and the water dissipates, the solids are left there. Over time, this builds up and causes a failure in your system. Just use the bathroom, keep a regular maintenance schedule, and your system has a chance to outlive its approximate life span.
