Those red-and-black bugs piling up on your siding or windows? You're not imagining things — it's box elder bug season in Southern Idaho.
Every October, box elder bugs swarm the sunny exterior walls of homes across Twin Falls and the Magic Valley in large numbers. They spend spring and summer feeding on box elder, maple, and ash trees, then shift their focus in fall: finding a warm place to spend the winter — and your home can look like a great option.
A few things worth knowing:
🔴 Are they harmful? Box elder bugs don't bite and won't cause structural damage. However, large swarms are a nuisance, and crushing them indoors can leave stains on walls and fabrics.
🚪 How do they get inside? They squeeze through gaps around windows, doors, utility lines, and siding. Once inside wall voids, they're tough to eliminate.
✅ What can you do?
• Seal gaps and cracks around windows, doors, and utility penetrations
• Replace worn weatherstripping and door sweeps
• Clear leaf litter and debris from around your foundation
• Avoid squishing them indoors — it can attract even more
If box elder bugs are covering your home this fall, a perimeter treatment can help knock populations down before they find a way inside. Our team serves Twin Falls, Jerome, Kimberly, Buhl, Wendell, and communities throughout the Magic Valley.
