Athens is expected to see a cold, wet weekend, with rain giving way to much colder temperatures.

Rain is likely Friday, with overnight lows dropping into the mid-20s. National Weather Service forecasts currently show the potential for freezing rain and sleet on Saturday, along with gusty north winds and daytime highs near 30.

Residents are encouraged to use caution on roadways, allow extra travel time, and keep an eye on updated forecasts as conditions develop.

Cold temperatures can cause pipes to freeze and burst, leading to water loss and costly repairs. A few simple steps can help protect your home and water system before the cold arrives.

* Turn off your irrigation system. Lawns do not need regular watering during cold months. Shut down your sprinkler system and drain any remaining water to prevent frozen lines.
Insulate outdoor faucets and hose bibs.
Use inexpensive faucet covers or pipe insulation from a local hardware store to help prevent leaks and pipe damage.

* Protect exposed pipes. Insulate pipes in attics, crawl spaces, and garages, especially those in unheated areas. PEX lines are also vulnerable in extreme cold.

* Know where your water shutoff is located. Every home has a main shutoff valve. Find it now so you can act quickly if a pipe bursts.
Taking a few minutes to prepare now can help avoid bigger problems later.
