Starting around 500 B.C., the Romans used this method to build roads in order the growth of their empire. Its a simple way to build something that will last for long time and won’t split like concrete. First step: remove 4"-6" of soil, then add non woven geotextile fabric to separate out the soil from base material. Second step: add the crush base material and pack well. Third: add an 1" of bedding sand. You don’t want to go any deeper than this because it will cause the block to tip up over. Fourth: step lay bricks, add edging to hold brick in place, tamp the bricks into place, and top with sand to fill the joints. Last step enjoy with campfire, friends, and family.

🤨 DOOMED to FAIL!!! 😡
Ok, I was testing to see if I could start grass seed without adding a blended soil mix. It didn't turn out great. Part of the area worked, but the rest looked like the first picture below. Adding a mix of compost, sand, and incorporating the mixture into the existing soil will give you a seed bed that holds moisture, drains well and allow the seed roots to push easily through the bed to establish themselves.

Mulching is a great way to enhance your landscape! Weather, such as rain, snow, wind, and sun will pack down mulch, preventing water, nutrients, and air from getting to your plants and shrubs. Before you add new mulch go through your beds and mix up the mulch and break up any hard clumps. It also may be a good time to add nutrients if you need them and then top of with fresh mulch. After 3-4 years you should remove all the mulch and get back to the soil. If you just keep adding mulch to trees, shrubs, and plants, over time you can do real damage to the landscape you love.

When ordinary straight stacks won't work. Try building a Holz Hausen from our German friends. Holz Hausen are very efficient at drying large amounts of firewood, and very pleasing to look at.
