Trash chute doors in apartment buildings must be self-closing for both critical health and safety reasons. These primarily relate to fire containment & odor control.

Trash chutes are vertical shafts that connect multiple floors. If a fire occurs—either in the chute or in the compactor room at the bottom—the chute can act like a chimney, allowing flames, smoke, and toxic gases to travel rapidly upward to other floors.
• Self-closing chute doors are typically rated fire doors (1.5 to 2-hour rating).
• They are designed to automatically shut and latch after use, creating a barrier to prevent fire and smoke spread between floors.
