*** Very Light Snow Likely Tonight ***
When: Monday - December 2nd, 2024
Here we go again folks! We got another very weak clipper system that will bring “splotchy” patches of light snow to the region once again tonight… Meaning, not everyone within this zone will see accumulations due to its scattered nature.

However, where it does snow it will be very high ratio stuff which is the slickest snow of all. Unfortunately, it is coming at the worst possible time beginning from the NW to S/SE between ~4:00 am and 11:00am for our far southern regions. This is a pretty disorganized mess but could cause significant travel impacts. I always say sometimes the lighter snows cause the biggest problems because people often think they can drive faster in it.

With that said, I think MOST Areas will see LESS than 1/2” total additional accumulation however, if a stronger ban sets up a couple areas may see Up To 1” but far less likely. Where it does fall it will easily stick due to the very cold temperatures. Another thing of concern especially on gravel roads and overpasses is the potential for re-freezing tonight which could create some areas of black ice and some gravel roads still have snow on them.

All in all a pretty lame storm system but one that could cause some sneaky travel impacts. Just be aware of changing conditions on area roadways and please take it slow! Hopefully we can get through the morning commute “ok” but that may be a stretch given y’all know how some people drive in our area.

Be safe and enjoy the beautiful snow out there today!

*** Significant Winter Storm Expected ***
HLEW: St. Louis, Missouri

When: Tuesday Night into Wednesday

A significant winter storm remains right on track for most of the HLEW Viewing Region. As has been forecast for over a week now, there have been very little changes in overall thinking and track of the storm with only just a slight NW shift of the primary snow bands.

That said, I think we have pretty well covered all the details and concerns with this storm which will primarily be MOSTLY Snow. The biggest limiting factors continue to be marginal surface temperatures along with warm ground temperatures which will melt snow at onset as it cools and will also compact. This limits very high end totals but as you can see from the map below, this storm is still going to crank out some pretty respectable snow accumulations. One thing to note as you can see from the graphic is that the range gets a little wider and lesser on the NW fringe. This is due to what will likely be a tight NW cutoff of the main snow band.

That said, this storm is still expected to cause moderate to major impacts as it rides right up I-44. Areas especially from I-44 to STL Points South and Southeast should prepare for at least some travel impacts as snow is expected to cover area roadways. Icing is NOT anticipated to be an issue due to the warmer surface temperatures with this storm.

Nonetheless, we have a pretty significant snowfall about to takeover the HLEW Region so folks should begin to prepare now in anticipation that this event is likely to occur. This will be a very beautiful snowfall that will stick to almost everything painting a winter wonderland thanks to it being a heavy wet snow. This also means those gigantic flakes are likely to occur and could be between a half-dollar and tennis ball in size at times under the heaviest bands. Snow will likely fall at 1” per hour rates at times!

With that said let’s get right to the details of this storm:

St. Louis Start Times:
- Rain/Snow Mix Develops 7:00p to 10:00p
- Changeover to all snow 10:00p to 1:00a
- Heavy Snow: 1:00am to 6:00am
- Snow Tapers: 6:00am to 11:00am

Overall this should be a pretty fun storm for the region but do keep in mind those that have to work out in it such as our first responders and healthcare workers. Especially give thanks to the amazing MODOT and IDOT workers who are understaffed and will be out working OT to clear the roads to keep you all safe. Give them plenty of room!

Take care and Snow Day On!
