We are thrilled to announce the promotion of Derrick Semilia to Executive Vice President, effective July 1, 2026. Derrick joined Hammond in 2008 as a summer intern prior to his junior year at the University of Akron. He ultimately stayed with us following that summer, balancing work and school until his graduation in 2010.

In Derrick’s 18-year tenure, he has been an instrumental leader in multiple facets of our construction management group. His experience includes the oversight of one billion dollars in construction projects, and leading a notable growth in our healthcare sector clients.

In 2020, Derrick was elevated to Vice President of Project Management. In this role Derrick further expanded the CM Policies and Procedures Manual, strengthened our technology capabilities and invested in the growth and training of our employees.

As Executive Vice President, Derrick will continue to serve our clients but will take on a much broader role in the general management and thought leadership of Hammond Construction. Derrick’s fresh perspective on future growth and investment in our people will help to frame the next chapter in our proud history.

We are finally getting some drier weather and warmer temperatures in Ohio! As we near the summer months, we want to remind our employees and trade partners about the seriousness of heat-related injuries in construction.

We took a few minutes, on this 'summer-like' Ohio day, to remind some of our teams about ways we can help prevent heat-related illnesses on-site. Water, Rest, and Shade are the main components of heat stress prevention. Also, early recognition of heat stress is important. Symptoms such as dizziness, excessive sweating, confusion, headache, and nausea can all be signs leading to heat exhaustion, or eventually heat stroke, which can be fatal. Across all industries in 2024 there were 48 workers that did not go home to their loved ones due to a heat-related death in the workplace.

Remember to stay hydrated, take breaks (in a shaded or cool area), know the signs and symptoms, and keep an eye on those around you!

Who needs scissors when you have a 50-ton train?! On Thursday, May 28th, we celebrated a ribbon cutting for the new East Roundhouse at the Age of Steam Museum in Sugarcreek, Ohio. The new facility is framed with steel girders, columns and beams and features an exterior facade that compliments the main roundhouse museum. Each stall includes a 112-foot interior track and radiant heat in the floors to maintain preservation.

The Age of Steam Roundhouse opened its doors in 2010 by railroad enthusiast Jerry Joe Jacobson. Bill Strawn, retired Board Chairman and friend of Jerry, noted his impactful life. “You are standing in the middle of a gentleman’s dream. An entrepreneur, a believer, a preservationist, a gentleman who understood the history of steam and how it applies to our country.”

The Age of Steam offers tours weekly throughout the summer, your inner child will thank you!

On Friday, May 15th, Perry Local Schools' students, teachers, administrators, parents and community members gathered at the new building site. In two years from now, the new 156,000 square foot school for fifth through eighth graders will be turned over to the community. Following Perry’s previous participation in the ELPP program, the district received a remarkable 100% funding offer from the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission for construction of the new middle school. Congratulations to the entire team on this milestone – Perry Pride continues to shine!

“As we continue to move through the process of upgrading our district’s facilities, our goal is to create spaces that will provide our students with meaningful, relevant 21st century learning opportunities. We were honored to be a member of the Dr. Frese Residential Center team, lead by County of Summit ADM Board, the Ohio Department of Behavioral Health and Hasenstab Architects. This 16-bed residential facility provides critical support for patients as they transition back to the community.

In the words of Aimee Wade, Executive Director of the County of Summit ADM Board:

“This facility is an example of strategic investment in community behavioral health infrastructure that will have a lasting impact for years. Every detail in this facility reflects the belief that individuals in recovery deserve safety, beauty, comfort and respect.

Dr. Frese often reminded us that people with mental illness can live meaningful lives, productive lives, extraordinary lives. As we look ahead, may this building stand as a symbol of hope, a motto of collaboration and a reminder of what communities can accomplish when we center humanity in our work.”

We wrapped up Safety Week with visits to our projects in North Canton, Salem, United, and Brunswick for a total of 9 site visits and 525 workers trained. We appreciate having dedicated time with our trade partners to discuss safety and the importance of maintaining high standards on our job sites. When we commit to a culture of safety, we protect the future of our workforce and our industry as a whole.

Last month, we celebrated the grand opening of Hilltop Elementary for Beachwood Schools. The unique school design for grades 3 through 5 utilizes the topography to create a classroom wing for each grade level. As you move up a grade, you move up the hill! The vacated Hilltop School is currently being demolished to make way for the final parking lots, driveways and playground. Perry Local Schools hosted a community meeting this week, as they approach the next major milestone in their long-term facility master plan. Hammond and BSHM Architects provided a design and construction update, sharing new renderings, construction logistics, schedule and upcoming engagement opportunities. The new 5-8 Middle School will be constructed in the area of Hartwick Park, just east of Perry High School. This project represents Perry Local’s continued investment in safe, modern learning spaces, creating a foundation of pride and unity for this close-knit community. Working in Ohio during the winter months can be brutal. We are incredibly thankful for the Hammond team and our trusted trade partners who continue to push through some of the toughest weather days of the year to keep projects moving forward.

Several of these photos were taken when temperatures were in the teens, with wind chills dropping into the single digits. Our Union Carpenters were doing whatever it took to get the next metal stud set and secured, while the masonry crews protected their work with temporary heat and reinforced plastic to maintain quality and safety.

We are grateful for everyone out there this week who is braving the Northern Ohio weather and demonstrating true grit, craftsmanship, and dedication to getting the job done right.
