What makes a custom pergola different?

A pergola does more than provide shade. It can define an outdoor room, create a comfortable place to gather, add privacy, and bring the entire design together.

At Rooftopia, every pergola starts with the space itself. We consider how you want to use it, how it connects to your home, and which details will make it more comfortable and functional. Custom fabrication, carefully selected materials, integrated lighting, and thoughtful shade solutions all help create a structure that feels like it belongs.

Whether it’s a rooftop retreat, backyard dining area, or inviting terrace, the goal is to create something that works beautifully for your lifestyle.

The details you notice after dark. ✨

A beautifully designed outdoor space shouldn't disappear when the sun goes down.

The best landscape lighting isn't about making a space brighter. It's about revealing what was thoughtfully designed in the first place.

A warm, layered lighting plan can:

emphasize architectural lines and material textures
create depth and visual hierarchy
guide movement without over-lighting the space
highlight specimen planting and focal points
create comfortable gathering areas
extend the experience of the landscape well into the evening

We favor professionally designed, low-voltage LED systems that can be integrated discreetly into the architecture and landscape. Rather than relying on visible fixtures or task-like illumination, the goal is for the light itself to become part of the experience.

The best lighting is often the light you don't notice.

You notice the glow on the planting.
The warmth beneath the pergola.
The path that seems to guide you naturally.
The architectural detail that comes alive after sunset.

That is layered, integrated outdoor lighting.

And that's when the landscape takes on an entirely different character after dark.

A Lakeview Rooftop, Reimagined

What was once an existing rooftop is now a comfortable, multi-functional outdoor retreat designed for everyday living and entertaining.

We designed this project to bring together modern materials and thoughtful details, including a custom pergola, steel privacy screens, wood-look porcelain pavers, and an outdoor kitchen with custom Dekton countertops. A spacious sectional and custom fire table create a welcoming place to gather, while integrated heaters and retractable shade help extend the season.

Custom planters and a dedicated vegetable garden bring greenery into the modern design, and carefully integrated lighting and irrigation keep the space both beautiful and functional.

From the initial structural planning to the final finishing touches, every detail was considered to create a cohesive outdoor space that feels like a natural extension of the home.

The result? A private rooftop retreat above the city, ready to be enjoyed in every way.

October Native Plant of the Month: White Snakeroot

Have you ever noticed clouds of tiny white flowers blooming in shady areas around Chicago and the suburbs? You may have spotted White Snakeroot (Ageratina altissima), one of our native Illinois plants.

White Snakeroot may be understated, but it has a lot going for it. Its late-season flowers provide valuable nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, and it’s a natural fit for part-shade gardens, woodland plantings, and naturalized landscapes.

It also has a surprisingly fascinating history. White Snakeroot contains a toxin called tremetol, which can cause milk sickness when livestock eat the plant and the toxin makes its way into their milk. There's a long-standing story that milk sickness was responsible for the death of Abraham Lincoln's mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln. While the story is widely repeated, her exact cause of death has never been confirmed with certainty.

One more reason to look a little closer at the native plants growing around us. They often have fascinating stories hiding beneath those delicate blooms.

Material Spotlight: Why We Love Steel

The best outdoor spaces bring thoughtful design and lasting performance together. Steel is one of our favorite materials for doing just that.

Strong, versatile, and endlessly adaptable, steel allows us to create architectural elements that feel purposeful, considered, and beautifully integrated into the larger design.

Why we love working with steel:

• Strength & structure. When properly engineered, steel provides the support needed for a range of outdoor features, from custom pergolas to architectural screens.

• Made for the space. Custom fabrication allows us to tailor dimensions, shapes, and details to the architecture, site conditions, and vision for each project.

• Designed to last. The right material, protective finish, detailing, and maintenance help steel stand up to the demands of Chicago’s outdoor environment.

• Form meets function. From privacy screens and planters to railings, edging, and distinctive architectural details, steel can solve practical challenges while adding character and visual interest.

We especially love how it allows us to integrate the details that make an outdoor space feel complete, creating a natural connection between architecture, materials, and the landscape.

Because thoughtful exterior design is about more than how a space looks. It’s how everything works together.

Which fall palette speaks to you: warm and traditional, or cool and unexpected? 🍂

When we design seasonal container gardens at Rooftopia, we like to offer both warm and cool palettes, giving each client a different expression of fall while keeping the overall composition intentional and connected to its setting.

🍁 Warm & Traditional

Inspired by the changing landscape, our warm fall palettes layer yellows, oranges, russets, and earthy browns for a classic autumn feeling.

💜 Cool & Unexpected

Our cooler palettes take a softer, brighter approach, combining purples, pinks, blues, and silvery tones for a fresh interpretation of the season.

But color is only part of the equation.

We look for plants and natural seasonal materials that bring distinctive form, texture, movement, and personality to each container. Cabbages add sculptural shape. Ornamental grasses bring movement. Seasonal foliage and natural branches add structure and dimension. Even a pop of colored eucalyptus can completely shift the palette.

We believe seasonal planting should feel considered, not decorated. We use living plants and natural materials to create containers that feel layered, textural, and connected to the landscape around them.

Whether you love classic autumn tones or prefer something a little more unexpected, fall container gardens are an opportunity to bring personality and seasonal beauty to your outdoor space.

Which would you choose: 🍁 warm or 💜 cool?

Rooftopia creates custom container gardens and fine gardening programs for Chicago homes, rooftops, terraces, and hospitality spaces.

What makes an outdoor space feel expensive?

It’s not necessarily the price of the materials. Often, it’s the details you don’t notice.

The utilities are there, but the pipes and power lines aren’t the first thing you see. Mechanical equipment has a place. Drainage is considered. Lighting is integrated. Irrigation is thoughtfully planned. Furniture, planting, shade, cooking, and architecture work together as one cohesive space.

Great outdoor design is about more than choosing beautiful products. It’s about solving the awkward details, integrating the necessary systems, and creating a space that works beautifully every day.

The goal?

You walk outside, pour yourself a drink, settle in, and stop thinking about how everything works.

You just enjoy it.

That’s when an outdoor space becomes more than an addition to your home—it becomes a completely new way to experience it.

Why do we love winter wreaths?

They’re one of the easiest ways to make an entrance feel warm, welcoming, and festive. We love creating ours with natural evergreens, branches, berries, cones, and other seasonal elements for a lush, organic look that can last well beyond the holidays.

And the best part? No maintenance required. Just hang it up and enjoy a little greenery all winter long. 🌲
