Here’s a peek at some of the custom built in cabinetry at one of our recently completed homes. The mudroom here was a bit challenging, as it featured a tight inside corner, but we still managed to design a solution that worked well for this family of five and made use of the “dead corner” with a couple of hidden cubbies inside the two corner lockers. We dressed the doors up with some vent holes at the suggestion of , which added a little whimsy to a simple design.

This property came with a view easement, which meant the design featured many jogs and corners in order to respect the view corridor. Some of these tight spaces presented wonderful opportunities for custom cabinetry and millwork. Here we see a shallow cabinet in a playroom to hide video games and toys while providing a beautiful space for the tv, accented by beautiful blue grass cloth selected by .

Finally, a clean set of white oak cabinets in the master bedroom provides space for a media corner, perfect for those like myself who simply cannot fall asleep without at least one Seinfeld rerun.

It’s been a minute since we’ve posted, as our team has been working hard on the home stretch of two projects and getting another off the ground. We are long overdue to share some of the amazing details from our recently completed homes. Check out the millwork details from one of our Minot customs, completed just before Christmas. This home, designed by features bright, wide open spaces and water views from nearly every room. The coffered ceiling anchors the spacious family room, and the panel wainscot and oversized windows add light and visual interest to the open stairway. A beautiful runner adds a pop of color and completes the picture.

Plenty more pictures to come from this beauty!

Powder rooms are sometimes a challenge, as we try to pack them into smaller and smaller spaces. This one is positioned under a set of stairs, just outside the “golf room/bar/man cave/she shed/funtown” (trademark pending) that we constructed in Cohasset. Jenny from did a wonderful job filling the space effectively without making it feel tight, and selecting such a fun sink basin and fixtures that complement the clean lines of the v groove wall paneling. Make sure you note that little soap dish - there were be a future post on that little detail that emerged from one of my favorite features in the whole project. Stay tuned!

There’s probably a PhD dissertation to be written about how and why the mudroom is now among the most crucial rooms in the home. The how and why, of course, matter not to us - we just love building them! Constructing mudroom cabinetry is a balance between form and function, to avoid what I like to call a “Pinterest mudroom” that gets social media likes but instead practical for actual use by a (large) family.

For this family of five, with the help of we came up with this design, in which each person gets a closed locker and small cubby to hide those coats, backpacks, hats and gloves, and an open compartment with plenty of air flow for wet and stinky shoes.

With a little extra end space we added a “catch all” cabinet for iPads, chargers, keys, and other “unmentionables” that God forbid our guests ever see cluttering our common spaces!

The white oak bench and counter top provides a subtle pop of color against the white cabinetry and slate herringbone heated floor.

“This is the most beautiful mudroom I’ve ever been in”

- my wife visiting me at work and probably dropping hints.

Taking you into Thanksgiving with…tradition! One of our favorite aspects of building custom homes is bringing intentional details to life. The architect on this project took care to design a front door surround in keeping with the classical Doric order (anyone remember art history? Me neither…but that’s why we have architects!) It’s always a pleasure when the design professional remains invested in the details of the project and collaborates with the builder to bring a very specific idea to life. We constructed this entire surround from Spanish Cedar in our shop, custom milling several of the moulding details in house. It’s always nerve wracking building something like this off site - but our team executed perfectly and it fit like a glove.

We’ve absent from instagram for a while as we’ve been busy preparing for some move-ins and getting this project off the ground. We have many exciting photos and video footage to share, so stay tuned! A happy and healthy Thanksgiving from the Grit and Grace Family!

Please allow us to introduce our newest team member, Eloise. She’s a hard working woman with a long reach and superhuman strength! With our unique approach of handling all framing in house, it’s important to have the right tools to get the job done efficiently and safely, minimizing the wear and tear on our bodies. Eloise is the first major capital equipment purchase we’ve made, and it’s exciting to invest in our company, process, team, and (most importantly) end product. When you hire Grit and Grace, you know you’re getting our expert crew from frame to finish, equipped with all the tools necessary to execute at the highest level. Keep your eyes peeled for Eloise at a job site near you!

Can’t let the finish guys at our Cohasset Harbor custom have all the fun…our crew was working hard right outside the front door finishing up this incredible covered entry with expansive views of the Harbor and Minot Light. The shingled knee walls provide a little privacy and the mahogany v-groove ceiling a beautiful burst of color for the space, tying in with the ipe decking. A ceiling fan will keep the space plenty cool even on the rare occasions with no sea breeze. Outdoor living at its best, and only one of THREE waterfront decks on this incredible home! Stay tuned for more as we approach the finish line on this one.

FORT!!! Now these are the details that make a house into a family home. At our recently completed new construction home in Hingham, the customer wanted a custom fort in the attic playroom. So he put his tool belt on and joined us for a day to help us build it! We used materials salvaged from the former house on the property combined with leftover millwork materials from the rest of the new house. The homeowner contributed the rope “balusters” and the ladder handrails. Sure beats the couch cushion and blanket forts I had as a kid! I think the customers likes his day job, but he could have a new career as a carpenter for Grit and Grace!

Check out this kids’ bathroom in our recently completed Hingham project. designed this one with separate spaces for showering and grooming, with a gorgeous, bright, roomy shower for growing boys. We were finally able to get some exterior shots of our completed Norwell custom home. designed a traditional colonial with hints of the homeowner’s Kentucky heritage, with the barn style attached garage, nearly 7 foot tall windows, and dual brick chimneys. The grand front portico leads to a two story open front foyer and a gorgeous kitchen (more photos to come!) Swipe to see all the grand exterior details on this one.
