Application Spotlight | Helps Reveal Hidden Earthworks in Southwest Amazonia.

Published by Prof. Martti Pärssinen and his colleagues, the study highlights how the VQ-780 II provided the high-resolution data needed to identify thousands of previously undocumented earthworks hidden beneath the Amazon rainforest canopy.

Over a flight distance of 4,430 km, approximately 4,497 km² of Southwest Amazonia were surveyed, resulting in the discovery or documentation of 432 earthworks, of which only 36 were previously known. Based on these findings and additional archaeological data, the researchers estimate that more than 20,000 precolonial earthworks may exist across the wider region. These findings provide important new insights into the scale of precolonial occupation and land use in Southwest Amazonia.

This remarkable project highlights the potential of technology for large-scale archaeological research, enabling scientists to uncover hidden cultural landscapes and advance our understanding of human history.
