Black gum, is a super slow growing tree capable of living for centuries. One New Hampshire tree was dated to around 679 years old.

That tree started growing sometime in the 1300s and survived centuries of New England storms, winters, and changing forests. Crazy.

Striped maple—also called moosewood—gets its nickname because moose are especially fond of eating its bark and young shoots. Even in winter, its green bark with white vertical stripes makes it one of the easiest trees to identify in a New England forest.
