🌳 Forestry Word Wednesday
This week's forestry term is Basal Area.
Basal area is one of the most common measurements foresters use to evaluate a forest. It tells us how much of an acre is occupied by tree stems and helps determine whether a stand is too crowded, too open, or just right.
Why is that important?
A forest with the proper basal area is typically healthier, grows better, and is more resilient to insects, disease, drought, and wildfire. It also helps foresters decide when a thinning may improve the overall health of the stand.
It's one more tool we use to keep Georgia's forests healthy and productive.
