Today’s megathrust, July 29/30 2025 Mw 8.8 (MMI intensity of IX- Violent) Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia earthquake sequence includes hundreds of strong foreshocks and aftershocks (many yet to come) affecting a vast area along the tectonic plate boundaries and triggering tsunami warnings all around the Pacific Ocean (https://lnkd.in/daPFhZfm).
Two massive (Exxon and Shell) offshore oil platforms near Sakhalin Island, Russia, costing over US$1 Billion each, are located close to the earthquake-affected region. Both platforms are seismically isolated by large Friction PendulumTM bearings (with 30,000 kip bearing capacity, 25 in. displacement capacity, and 4-sec isolated period), engineered, manufactured, and tested by Earthquake Protection Systems, Inc. (EPS, https://bit.ly/41SvqvN).
The top-rated seismic isolators, sitting atop a four-legged concrete gravity structure and supporting a 6-story industrial facility in each offshore oil platform, are designed for continued functionality and the long-term reliable protection of these critical infrastructure projects (and the environment) from potential multi-hazard damage under severe seismic and arctic conditions.
