Pest of the Week: Cherry Bark Tortrix 🦋

That reddish brown resin oozing from your fruit tree bark might not be sap — It could be a sign of cherry bark tortrix.

This invasive, bark-boring moth mainly targets mature fruit trees, especially at pruning wounds, cankers, or bark cracks. The larvae feed on tissue beneath the bark, cutting off nutrient and water supply. Left unchecked, they can kill limbs or entire trees.

Keep an eye out for:
🟤 Reddish brown, gummy resin oozing from bark
✂️ Damage concentrated at pruning wounds or cracks
🪵 Dead wood harboring larvae

What makes this pest particularly aggressive in the Pacific Northwest is the lack of natural enemies. In its native Eurasian range, natural predators manage the population. Without these controls in North America, they spread much more aggressively.

Treatment exists, but prevention matters just as much. Careful pruning practices that minimize wounds and removing infested bark go a long way.

Pest of the Week: California Oakworm 🐛

Is your oak canopy looking thinner by the day? Are green droppings piling up everywhere? California oakworm season is here.

California oakworms feed on all oak species, and heavy infestations can completely strip a canopy. While most oaks will re-leaf, repeated annual defoliation weakens them over time.

Keep an eye out for:
🍃 Skeletonized leaves with a lace or stained glass appearance
💚 Green droppings accumulating on surfaces below the tree
🎨 Pupae hanging from bark and twigs

California oakworm populations swing wildly year to year for reasons scientists still don't fully understand. Each outbreak typically lasts about two years before crashing naturally. Healthy oaks can usually withstand these pests, but heavy or repeated infestations might require treatment.

Pest of the Week: Fire Blight 🔥

Warm, wet spring weather brings a lot of things. Unfortunately, fire blight is one of them!

This bacterial disease hits a variety of ornamental trees hard. The name is fitting: infected shoots and blossoms look scorched, turning black and wilting, as if they've been torched. You'll also see milky bacterial ooze seeping from infected tissue and cankers forming on branches.

What makes fire blight particularly devastating is its speed. Under ideal warm and wet conditions, it can destroy an entire pear or apple orchard in a single growing season.

Keep an eye out for:
🌱 Wilting of new shoots in spring
🍂 Blackened leaves and blossoms
💧 Milky bacterial ooze on branches

Treatment requires the right approach. Streptomycin or copper-based bactericides can help, but fungicides are ineffective because fire blight is bacteria, not fungus. Also avoid excess nitrogen fertilizer, which promotes the succulent new growth that fire blight loves.
