Successfully planting a tree goes far beyond just getting the tree in the ground. When, how, and where you plant can determine a tree's success or failure.

A spring-planted tree goes into the soil right as heat and water demand start climbing. If the roots aren't established by July, the tree pays for it. The species, timing, hole depth, and watering schedule are integral to survival.

Fall is one of the best times to plant a tree. Warm soil, cooler air, and seasonal rainfall give roots a head start before summer heat arrives. Deciduous trees especially thrive because they're already winding down above ground while continuing to grow below.

Suckers are a stress response. Trees push new growth when something is off: root damage, compacted soil, a graft union losing ground, overly aggressive pruning. Removing the shoots without addressing the cause means you're doing this forever.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗙𝗮𝗿 𝗗𝗼 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱? 𝗔 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 & 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵

Most people assume that roots stop at the drip line, but lateral roots on a mature tree routinely extend up to 3x the canopy radius. These roots sit almost entirely in the top 24 inches of soil, right where your pipes, foundation, and pavement are.

A willow near a water source can push roots 100 feet or more. A maple's shallow root system is one of the most common causes of lifted sidewalks in older neighborhoods. Even a relatively young tree can have roots 10 to 15 feet out from the trunk.

Understanding what's happening underground changes how you plant, where you build, and what problems you can actually prevent.

Pest of the Week: Gold Spotted Oak Borer 🪲

Since 2004, gold spotted oak borers have killed hundreds of thousands of California oaks. Gold spotted oak borers are native to Arizona and Mexico, but arrived in San Diego two decades ago and has been devastating California oak populations ever since. If you have oaks, it's worth knowing about the gold spotted oak borer.

Keep an eye out for:
🔴 Reddish staining or weeping spots on the trunk
🪵 D-shaped exit holes in the bark
🪾 Crown thinning and dieback

Treatment options include bifenthrin or emamectin benzoate applications, but heavily infested trees often need to be removed. The key is chipping infested wood immediately to prevent spread. For areas with ongoing pressure, consider planting more resistant oak varieties when replacing trees.
