"RUN!"

One second I was leaning against an old pickup, listening to a boombox blast Def Leppard while the smell of cut grass, the nearby fire, and Polo hung in the warm summer air.

The next second I was running flat out through knee-high weeds, trying not to lose a sneaker in the mud. Behind us, somebody knocked over a cooler, somebody else dropped an entire case of Bud, and it all mixed in with nervous laughter and pure panic.

The funny thing is, I couldn’t tell you what day that was, or even what year.

IBut I can still remember the feeling.

Those field parties had no invitations, no schedules, and no backup plans. Somebody knew somebody who knew where it was. You followed a line of taillights down a dirt road, parked wherever you could, and suddenly there were fifty people standing around.

Someone always dragged out a huge boombox, powered by those huge D batteries. The conversations bounced from cars to concerts to who was dating who. Nobody was checking a phone because nobody had one.

We were just there. Completely there.

Not every party ended in disaster, but if they did, you definitely remember it.

It usually started with the distant glow of headlights...accompanied by those ominous red and blue lights.

There was usually a sudden silence.

Then one or two voices would cut through the night.

“COPS!”

People scattered in every direction. Friends disappeared into the woods. Future track stars were discovered on the spot. Hearts pounded, legs flew, and somehow it felt terrifying and hilarious at the same time.

These stories survive because the memories did. There’s no video of those nights. No evidence. Just a generation that can still laugh about them forty years later.

Maybe that’s why we remember them so well.

It wasn’t the field.

It wasn’t the keg.

It wasn’t even the escape plan.

It was the freedom of being young enough to believe the night would never end.
