Do you have an earthquake preparedness kit set aside for yourself and for your family? It’s crucial for every Los Angelino to be able to grab a basic emergency supply kit and head to a safe area to shelter in place when an earthquake hits.

It is up to every one of us to put together such a supply kit, store it in an air-tight plastic bin or bag, and place it in an area where it is easy to grab during an emergency. Here’s what should be in such a bag, at a minimum:

(1) A gallon of water per day, per person, for a minimum of three days
(2) A three-day supply of non-perishable food for you and your pets (think cans and a can opener!)
(3) A robust first-aid kit, along with your medications (including pain relievers, anti-diarrheals, antacids, etc.)
(4) A flashlight with extra batteries, a hand-cranked radio, and extra batteries for your cell phone
(5) A change of clothing per person
(6) Extra pair of glasses / contact lenses, with lens solution
(7) A good whistle in case you need to alert others
(8) Matches in a waterproof container
(9) Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
(10) Extra masks and hand-sanitizers
(11) Important documents (e.g., ID, insurance policies, bank records, and other family records)
(12) A wrench/pliers to turn off utilities, if needed (e.g., gas)
(13) A good paper map of your area
(14) Activities for young children

Moreover, every family should designate, ahead of time, a central meeting point where family and friends can gather after the immediate emergency has passed. This will help ensure that all can be taken care of in the days following the earthquake.

Finally, don’t forget you also need to inspect and refresh your emergency kit every few months, keeping canned foods, medications, and water in good condition, and replacing expired items frequently! Having such an emergency kit will keep you and your loved ones safe during the next “Big One!”

Yes! Homes built in the 1950s or earlier (and there are thousands of such homes in Los Angeles) were built on foundations made from hand-mixed concrete that contains little or no steel rebar to give it extra strength. Such old construction homes are also not anchored to their foundations, despite the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) warning that homes that aren’t bolted to their foundations are vulnerable to damage from earthquake shaking.

Moreover, decades of rainy seasons and bone-dry Summers — as well as frequent earthquakes – could cause an old home’s unreinforced concrete foundation to weaken and crack. And a brittle, damaged foundation can no longer safely support an old home when a natural disaster strikes, especially an old home that is not bolted to its foundation.
