Spring Lawn Tips

MOWING - It can be tempting to get out the lawn tools and attack your yard just as soon as it is warm enough to go outside without a coat on. Be patient, though, and let your lawn wake itself up gradually. If you spend too much time on your lawn before it is fully green, you run the risk of compacting the grass or killing new shoots before they have a chance to mature. Wait until your lawn has turned mostly green before you begin mowing or aerating in the spring.

FERTILIZING - Fertilizing is one of the most important spring lawn care tips. You may have fertilized your lawn in the fall, but it is also important to do so during the spring in order to help your lawn grow lush and thick. Spring fertilization helps your lawn replenish preserves that were depleted over the long winter months

How can we get our lawns ready for winter?

In Florida, the transition from summer growth to winter growth typically begins sometime between mid-September and mid-October. This transition comes earlier in northern parts of the country but is revealed by a distinctive decrease in the amount of upright growth, which decreases the need for frequent mowing.

This transitional period is an ideal time to provide fall fertilization and to perform core aeration and over seeding for cool-season grasses. Well fertilized grass will store up significant food reserves and produce healthy roots during the next 60 days to sustain it during the winter. Core aeration promotes significant root growth during the transitional period.
